Sudden behavioral change - help!

I have a six year old golden retriever named Barley. I have recently married and moved into a new home. Since we have moved, Barley is choosing to defacate and urinate in the house! I have never, ever had a problem with this as she was house trained as a puppy and has been excellent at doing her business outside. She is given ample time outside (walks, being outside all evening) we even take her outside in the morning to give her the opportunity to go, but many times she refuses...and has to be inside all day till we return from work. I don't know what to do, except to make her an "outside" dog because I can't trust her to leave her in the house all day anymore. Also, I am 8 months pregnant, so cleaning up feces and urine isn't something I can manage at this point of my pregnancy. Any suggestions? I am desperate as this dog is like my child.

These 2 statements confuse me. Would you make your child and "outside child" for having an accident?

Could you use a baby gate to keep her in one room, such as a kitchen or bathroom? I understand you can't let her have free roam of the house if she's having accidents, but putting her outside won't fix the problem.

Have you cleaned the accident spots with a really good cleaner? Nature's Miracle is a great one. Even if you can no longer smell or see it, the dog still can.

I'd keep Barley confined for now, in a room. and try to go back to basics with housebreaking. Take her out after every meal, playtime, every couple of hours, and treat/praise ALOT when she DOES go outside. If you can, having a friend or neighbor stop in a few times a day to take her out to relieve herself would help.

btw - welcome to the board! we'd love to see a pic of Barley!

Although it sounds like the change in her environment and family dymanimcs could be causing the problem, it is probably a good idea to have her vet checked. There is always the possibility of an underlying medical condition with sudden behaviour changes.

Thank you for your suggestions. Barley is already confined to the kitchen. This is not an isolated incident, it has been happening on a regular basis for the past 6 months. Barley is taken outside after meals, she is taken on regular walks, she is taken outside in the morning before we leave for work as well. As I mentioned, she has ample opportunity to do her business outside. We have tried rewarding her for "going" outside...etc as I know and believe in positive reinforcement. However, it is not working and is frustrating at this point as it is ongoing and has become a significant issue - no matter what we try.

Thank you Lissa...that is my next step, taking her to see her vet. I thought I'd give this a try first...

A sudden loss of houstraining - or any other sudden behavioral changes - is always an indication for a vet visit FIRST. No point trying anything else if the dog cannot help what she's doing.

Let us know what the vet says, and then we'll have some suggestions for you!:)
