Bone Meal Supplement

Anyone use or know where I can find bone meal tablets or powder?

The main pet stores don't seem to carry it (PetSmart, PetValue - haven't been to SuperPet for it yet) I'm sure I can find it at a health store but I have read it's much cheaper to get it at an animal store as an animal supplement rather then a human one (even though it's the same thing!! ;) )

Just wondered if anyone has bought it or seen it for animals before I go out to the health store.

Are you using or wanting to use it as a calcium supplement? Missing Link has a supplement with Glucosamine and Condroitin in it.. is that what you are looking for?

I've recently started switching to home cooking for my dogs and the recipes generally call for a few bone meal tablets.

The book Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD wants bone meal because it provides a balanced ratio of calcium to phosphorus and provides some minerals.

I'm not sure if Missing Link would be the same sort of thing. I'm pretty new to this and don't know much about bone meal and what is comparable to it - I just know he recommends the bone meal supplement.

The girl at PetValue was saying that something she had was the same thing and it was something with Glucosamine in it but I thought I better double check that first.

Are they the same thing or is there something "special" about bone meal??

Technodoll feeds raw so she'll know best. I've been told if feeding raw to go with either Missing Link or Solid Gold Sea Meal to make sure you have all the bases covered.

You have to be really careful when buying bone meal (cheap bone meal has elevated lead levels) - which is why I'm sure the book calls for human grade quality.

Bone meal needs to be given to your dog with cod liver oil - otherwise it will not be absorbed properly.

Yeah they do all say make sure it's human grade and not for plants or other things.

When I looked for it, I couldn't find it at one of the main health food chains so I started making sure that Dodger got his calcium from natural sources instead....

The store explained that usually only pregnant women wanted it but because of the possibility of high-lead content, it wasn't as popular anymore so they stopped selling it.
