switching to better food, can I stop the old one early?

this website has already been a benefit to my little furbaby.

I had read a bunch of food related threads and looked at the one about grading your pup's food. The Iams Smartpuppy had done very poorly, so I decided she needed something better.

Anyway, I choose the Wellness line and got her the puppy food. I started the process of switching her to the new food, and have a somewhat interesting problem.

She now picks out the Wellness and eats it and leaves the Iams in the bowl. (Melei has very good taste :thumbs up )

Should I just stop the Iams even though she is only up to about a 1/2 and 1/2 mix right now?

It depends how well she's digesting. Some (very rare) dogs can switch over night, but most need at least a week to adjust. If she's picking out all the Wellness but is digesting it well, you could try one smaller meal of just wellness and see what happens. It the stool is already a bit softer than usual, she might need more time.

Keep in mind too that once you've switched over completely to Wellness, you're probably going to have to reduce the amount your feeding. Wellness is much more dense and the contents are more digestible, so your dog will get the calories and nutrients she needs with less food. With holistic food that doesn't have stool hardeners in it, you can usually tell if you're over feeding if your dog has a consistenly soft stool (not diarrhea, just soft). If that's the case, you just drop 1/8c every few days until it hardens up.

Good luck. Wellness is a great food.:)

Well she doesn't eat alot to begin with. Both bags of food say she should be eating 1 to 1&1/2 cups of food a day at her 4 lbs of weight. I have never seen her eat that much!

I am lucky if she eats 3/4 cup in a day. But she is healthy, active and growing nicely.

The digestion seems to be just fine. I have seen no change in frequency and just that her poo is a little firmer, and darker since the wellness. oh, and there is less of it each time.

I also tend toward a very slow switch so it could be that I am too slow. I did 1/4 welness for 4 days and have done 1/2 wellness for 3 days already...was going to move to 3/4 day after tomorrow and just wondered if I should just stop the Iams now or do the 3/4 for 4 days first.

I'd say go to 3/4 for a day and see what happens; then the next day give all Wellness.

The stool should get a bit smaller because your dog will be absorbing most of it.:) (But she should still be going- if you see signs of constipation, that's a different story).
