raingirl April 2nd, 2006, 06:12 PM After the last 2 years, I have learned that our AC SUCKS in our apartment. So I'm looking for options to keep it cool.
I am going to buy light blocking curtains for all windows. Any other suggestions?
wdawson April 2nd, 2006, 06:44 PM just don't be one of those tacky people that put tin foil on the windows.....lol
jesse's mommy April 2nd, 2006, 07:02 PM What about a portable air conditioner? It might be a little pricey, but could be worth it with Odin.
phoenix April 2nd, 2006, 07:10 PM Do you have windows on two opposite sides of the apartment? If so, you could create a current by putting window fans in those windows with one blowing air in and the other blowing air out.
Another idea- ceiling fans? We have one in our bedroom, it really helps.
wdawson April 2nd, 2006, 07:49 PM use a dehumidifer .....it will take the moisture out of the air........
raingirl April 2nd, 2006, 09:18 PM Heheeh! I actually have considered the tinfoil in one room, it's our spare room/computer room. The venetian blinds stay closed all the time, but they are thin. I don't want to take them down, or put up extra curtains!
I don't think we are allowed portable air conditioners in our apartment...unless it's one you don't put in the window. Besides, I don't know that I would feel comfortable leaving it on during the day with Odin all alone. I'm kinda hoping that with dark curtains with our regular air conditioning, it should be ok.
I think our biggest problem is that we have a MASSIVE window (it's about 6 or 7 feet wide and goes all the way to the ceiling) that faces south west. We also have a solarium (enclosed balcony) right beside the window, and it gets over 100F in there even in winter just from the sun, and the seal around the door sucks, so it pops open and lets all kinds of hot air in. And we only had "shears" last summer, so all the bright light was blaring in all day long.
I was thinking dehumidifier too, but wasn't sure if it would help.
So...if I got the seal on the solarium door fixed, kept the windows closed, had dark light blocking curtains, and a dehumidifier, would that work you think?
We do have one window on the north side of our building, but I don't think the air flow thing would work, since we have to keep it closed at night (there is a train track below it, and it's WAY to loud to sleep with it open).

You don't necessarily put portable air conditioners in a window. They have them on wheels so you can put it in any room you want. We are considering getting one for our garage because we are considering turning it into another room in the house. Kind of like a game/bar room. We've seen them at Home Depot. Here's a link to show you what I'm talking about:

Hopefully this helps.
Prin April 2nd, 2006, 09:56 PM Don't get dark curtains, IMO. Get thick white ones. Dark ones will absorb the heat anyway, and keep the room hot, while white ones will reflect it out and still keep the room bright.
raingirl April 3rd, 2006, 06:43 PM I don't mean "dark" curtains, I mean the light blocking ones that are coloured on the inside (where you see it) and have a white plastic like foam on the outside to reflect the light. They act as insullators to keep the heat out.
Prin April 3rd, 2006, 08:46 PM ok... I was picturing the sauna created by thick black curtains...
jesse's mommy April 3rd, 2006, 08:50 PM Not sauna -- atmosphere.
jiorji April 4th, 2006, 03:03 AM just don't be one of those tacky people that put tin foil on the windows.....lol
haha the tin foil isn't to keep cool. It's to keep moisture in. If you see that in anyone's window, you can be sure they're growing pot.
(just information that someone passed on to me):o

Right, uh huh.

But don't you want to keep the moisture out? Since humidity just adds to the heat (or makes it hot and sweaty in a non-sexy way)
Rick C April 5th, 2006, 11:28 AM Tin foil on windows in dusty prairie towns is far too common to blame on drugs. :sorry:

Writing4Fun April 5th, 2006, 11:38 AM Here's (http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=10284204&whse=&topnav=&cat=) a portable air conditioner at Costco. You still need to vent it out the window, but at least it's only two little hoses and you don't have to prop up this ginormous machine.

Either that, or the people who live in dusty prairie towns have found ways to entertain themselves until the next rainfall. :D :p

lol if feel like such a dork explaining this ...my ex was a big stoner and he used to give me speeches on this stuff (yawn)........but apparently weed thrives on humidity, hence the tin foil.so you want humidity if you grow pot.
But i don't, so humiditiy is yucky and "non-sexy".lol
happycats April 6th, 2006, 12:35 PM Ceiling fans make a big difference, and are pretty inexpensive.;)
