Hello All:

We are a new puppy owner to a 7week old ****zu that we have had 1 week. Today during his bath we noticed a "bubble" on his abdomen. It is very soft and can be "pushed" in. Is this a possible hernia???? He doesn't appear to be sick....eating fine with no changes in bathroom habits.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

First off congrats on your new puppy!!

I have never had a puppy, only older dogs we adopted but I would take your pup into the vet for a checkup.

Hope everything is ok

First, congrats on the new puppy and welcome to the forum.

Are you sure the pup is seven weeks, so that means you brought the pup home at six weeks? That's pretty young. Puppies really shouldn't go to their forever home until at least eight weeks. Some places wait until twelve weeks. As for the bubble, the best advice would be is to go to the vet. We aren't vets here and really can't diagnose your furbaby over the internet. After you see the vet, please let us know what they say.

And, we love pictures, so please post lots!!

Your pup sounds like it has an umbilical hernia. It is quite common. Sometimes surgery is done to correct it but in most cases it is left alone. They are caused at birth when mom is chewing off the cord and tugs a little to hard.

When the hernia sticks out then sucks back in, it is not a closed hernia. It therefore will need to be closed when your dog is altered. It's nothing serious just happens with some pups.

Thanks for the info. We have an appointment to see the vet this afternoon so hopefully she'll confirm a hernia and it won't be anything more serious.

Thanks again!!!!!
