Adopting another dog

Hi,

My husband and I are wanting to adopt another dog. We are trying to decide between two of them. We currently have a male pom who is a little over a year old. He loves pretty much all dogs and people. He is still very much a puppy with lots and lots of energy. The two dogs we are looking at are also both young nuetered males and people friendly. Both are potty trained but still need other training. One is a black pom and one is a pom spnaiel mix. The mix and moose really hit it off but doesn't seem as interested in us. The black pom is very affectionate and sweet towards us but a little weary of moose (seems to be slowly warming up) and afraid of big dogs. He plays fine with the other poms where he is now. Any thoughts? I think we are leaning more towards the black pom but I want to make sure that the two dogs will eventually be buddies. By weary I mean keeps distance and gently nips occasionally at Moose but does not growl or bark.

I personally would go with the spaniel pom cross... he's the one that gets along with Moose. Spaniels are slow to trust people so he won't be all over you at first but once settled in your home will love and adore you. The reason I pick the spaniel pom over the black pom is because if he is nipping at Moose out of his comfort zone then imagine once he settles in to your home and decides he's going to be top dog. He already has it in him now so it will only accelerate with settling in. JMHO.

i have noticed the black pom gets more snippy when he is more scared/ outside his comfort zone with other dogs. He seems great around people all the time even small children. So I wondering if it might actually be the opiste since he does fine with the foster mom's five poms? I do think the mix would get along but even though they were playing for the most part the were trying to hump each other quite a bit so I am not sure there would be any less of a dominance issue. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't be able to choose one over the other so why not adopt both. As the mum to 4 poms, my moto is the more the merrier.

I agree with BMD if the pom is showing dominance now it may get worse. Spaniels are very sweet and once they know and trust you they will love unconditionally. But bottom line is that it is your choice and you and Moose will need to make the final decision
