Sunset Boulevard - 1950

This film is over 55 years old and it indeed stands the test of time.
Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson as an aging former silent picture star and William Holden as the younger (though not SO young) and less than accomplished screenwriter. Joe Gillis (Holden) goes to live with Norma Desmond (Swanson) and the film is based primarily on their relationship. The dynamic between the principals is what really makes this film work well.

Through the dialogue and subtext, this film has a lot to say on the subjects of ageism/aging, opportunism, honesty, and illusion/delusion. It also has loads to say about Hollywood itself. I enjoyed this film a lot and there are many memorable scenes. The scene with Holden in the pool right at the beginning of the film is AMAZINGLY shot. I give it an 8/10
