My dog eats random things!

I am just completely lost with my dog's logic of what should be eaten. For some reason he like to eat tissues and socks! what the heck is up with that? Does anyone else have that problem or is my dog just completely abnormal?? :(

Many dogs will eat just about anything they can get hold of - rocks, socks etc. Labradors are often bad for this.

You just need to keep these things out of the reach of your dog in the home, and for outside, teach him the "Leave it" command.

Or they could just be looking for attention. Jesse toilet papered the house when we first got her. She also took two boxes of spaghetti off the counter and shook it around because she liked the "rattle" noise and it went everywhere -- she still likes to beg for raw spaghetti before I put it in the pot. She also ate wires. That was a big one. She still loves q-tips and, ummm, feminine products. The leave it command is a wonderful command to use, but also pay close attention to what you have around. We actually got down on our hands and knees and crawled around the house to see things from her point of view. You would be surprised at what you find!

Tissues, socks, underwear (find a REALLY good tall hamper - you'll be glad), corners of bed sheets, tags (my pointer de-tags everything as soon as it comes in the door), woobies, you name it. Peaches had surgery to investigate an eaten curtain tie 2 years ago now, so I'm hyper careful about anything within reach. The tag thing I'm kinda happy about, Simon doesn't eat them, just rips em off and then lets them lay and Peach won't touch em cuz they've been Simon-ized (pun intended :p)

Just make sure it's not a wicker/basket like hamper. Jesse ate a hole through the bottom of that so she could pull out the socks and underwear!

Yep Brandy there is that too. You know the true measure of the love you have for your pet when you're pulling a semi-digested canvas curtain tie out the back end cuz she can't push due to 18 staples in her belly (the surgery actually MOVED it through her intestines). It also teaches you to be careful about everything and like jesse's mommy said, find something they can't get into and be dilligent (see the cat eating weird things thread)

A big favourite was tinsel. Nothin' quite like walking stooped behind your dawgie on Christmas day trying to yank sparkly pom-pom's from a poop-shoot! Needless to say - we don't use tinsel anymore. Used kleenex and dryer sheets are yummy. Whole branches, bark and all make great snacks. Happily we're passed the stage when the inside of couches, foam pillows, down duvets (yippee - feather fight !), underwear crotches, the TV remote, telephones, the bumpers on the waterbed, electrical cords, a camera, wall sockets, entire leashes, every single pair of shoes I owned, antique wood chairs, shirt and coat pockets...actually just about anything was fair game for the first coupla years. Yup, mighty glad to be past that.

I was going to pose this question today myself, but in my dogs case it is a behavior that occurs after reverse sneezing. He doesn't do it all the time but one day I caught him trying to eat the table cloth off the table. He likes to gobble down grass if he gets outside after an episode of reverse sneezing as well. Anyone else have this problem?

My hamper had holes in the side of it.. Cider started pulling thongs through the holes to play with.. yikes.
That and tissue has always been the number one problem. We've worked on it, but now the laundry is out of reach, and many garbage cans have lids on them. Just makes life easier..

Oh yeah - the trick is keeping everything out of sight and out of the way.

She still loves q-tips and, ummm, feminine products.

This made me smile...when I was about 9 years old my family had a long haired daschund named Duffy with an affinity for, umm, feminine products. My parents left on a month long trip to China - the first time we were being left for so long.
So my mom called when they arrived in Beijing and when she asked the babysitter how things were the response was, "The girls are fine but I walked into your bedroom and my god I thought there'd been a murder!"
