Shamrock February 22nd, 2006, 03:49 PM My dog doesnt eat tinned food, but I give my cats a small amount of wet food twice a day, in additon to the dry down for free-feeding
If room temperature, fine like that, but if its been in the fridge... I warm it in the microwave.
It always just seemed to me that it would be more enjoyable, taste better.
Cold cat food seems unappetizing, but maybe this is a "human" perception.
For the odd times when I have just fed it cold.. I notice they still eat it the same, doesnt seem to make that much difference.. if any.;)
For finicky eaters, heating the food is a great way to entice with the smell, but my cats are definitely not finicky.
I suppose it's kind of redundant.. just like to give them a "warm" breakfast and dinner.:D
I was just curious if you did the same thing?
cpietra16 February 22nd, 2006, 03:51 PM My cats definately like warm food. The smells are stronger, and my dog, well my dog eats anything warm, cold, hot...she's a lab:D
mom_to_many February 22nd, 2006, 03:59 PM With 6 cats I usually don't have leftovers..but if I do, yes, I also warm it up. They just don't seem to like it cold. And with my dogs, I mix canned food with warm water, then pour it over their dry food. This trick keeps everyone at their own bowls...no fights!!
jessi76 February 22nd, 2006, 04:20 PM I do the same, warm the food with some hot water.
Shamrock, doesn't your microwave stink after you zap kitty food?! I couldn't imagine microwaving anything else in there until it had been aired out, wiped down, and neutralized.
Prin February 22nd, 2006, 04:21 PM With my doggies, I just always assumed they'd rather cold food as both are usually pretty hot here in the house. Cold food in the morning seems sort of refreshing to them, in my eyes.
Shamrock February 22nd, 2006, 04:33 PM I do the same, warm the food with some hot water.

jess.. it doesnt seem to.. unless I've lost my sense of smell..:D
I cover it, and its only in for a few seconds.. not bringing it up to "hot".
I think "that" might stink.;)
SunGurl372 February 22nd, 2006, 05:04 PM I mix a bit of canned in with Harley's evening meal, and like Shamrock, I put it in the microwave for a few seconds because I keep the opened can in the fridge. I also use warm water to mix up the SeaMeal I put in her food, so by the time I'm done it's practically like I poured gravy all over her kibble. She LOVES it.
chico2 February 22nd, 2006, 05:06 PM My cats have the same eating schedule as yours, except mine are very finicky:mad: I usually add a little warm water to their canned food.
I read somewhere that cold food out of the fridge is not good for them, but don't ask me why,I don't remember:D
Joey.E.CockersMommy February 26th, 2006, 12:08 AM I actually never even thought about warming Joeys food - he just gets the just a wee bit with some seal meal in it. HE gobles it up pretty good - should I be heating it up for him. Maybe he would like it even better.
glasslass February 26th, 2006, 02:16 AM I warm just a few seconds to take it down to room temperature. They don't like it hot.
kayla February 26th, 2006, 06:42 PM Like others I also add hot water with the canned food. I feel like it would be nicer to eat a little warmer, and it makes the canned food easier to mix in with the kibble :)
Prin February 26th, 2006, 10:20 PM Hey, I just was looking at fats (on the net, not in the mirror :p) and I found out that flaxseed oil is really fragile, so if you heat it up, it will break down and be useless (it has trouble even at room temperature, supposedly). So if your kibble has flaxseed oil, even if it's probably already gone by cooking the food back at the factory, maybe cooking it again is not a great idea... Just a thought. But it probably doesn't matter anyway. Nevermind. :o
Dog Dancer February 27th, 2006, 06:46 PM Well my lab will eat anything any temperature also. But the Akita X definitely likes her food warmed up. I use hot water to mix the sea meal and let it stand for a few minutes while I get the rest ready and then it's really thick. The dogs love it. If I'm adding canned food or leftovers on top of the meal it has to go into the micro for 12 seconds before my older girl will even look at the bowl. I thought I was in a very select few who went through this, obviously not!!!
want2help April 16th, 2006, 10:43 PM I warm up the canned food in the microwave for the dogs and the cats. It stinks for a while, but as for using it immediatly afterwards for human food- I have no problem. I do not put anything in my pets bowl that would disgust me in mine!:D
sealady April 17th, 2006, 10:40 AM In the summer I leave the dogs home cooked meatloaf cold, in the winter I warm it.

We take the chill off any food that has been in the fridge. I think as animals get older, they get tooth sensitivity to cold just like we do, especially cats, so we always make sure the food is not cold.
However, in the summer, the dogs get "bone-sicles" We get bones from the butcher and freeze them. We give them to the dogs on hot days and they love it.
We even used to serve warm mash, in the winter, to our elderly mare when she was alive.
