Pitbulls attack and it is not on the front page of every paper and on every news program in the country. They are in the news if they even look at someone the wrong way.
It seems strange that it is not in the media if it actually happened.

I just called the radio station and spoke with the news director. He told me that because it is not considered a top 5 news story, it hasn't hit the national news websites or locals yet, but will likely appear on Toronto Star website and the Globe site later today.

Here's what he said:

Fellow was out walking 2 pbs and they broke away and attacked the police horse who is now removed from duty and on the "injured list" until he heals. All 4 legs now bandaged. Officer had a hard time controlling horse as it was being attacked. o new on fate of dogs at this point.

Just because it's not readily in the press, doesn't mean it didn't occur. It did and you will read about it later....

Here's what actually happened:

Trooper the horse and his officer rider were on duty when a lady walking 2 dogs, one a suspected pit bull and the other appears to be a mastiff X, and the lady lost control of the leashed dogs. The officer did his best to keep control of the horse while the lady tried to re-capture the dogs and control them.

Unfortunately, Trooper is now injured and off duty for at least a week and the dogs are in the care of a Toronto animal facility.

Horse and officer managed to eventually get away from the attacking dogs.

They said the other dog was a Rhodesian Ridgeback Mastiff???
At leats that is what the star says.

The Sun says a pit bull and another dog (no breed indicated).

I just don't understand how this guy let go of the dogs. When I walk capone all though he hasn't shown any dog aggression I wrap his leash around my hand so if he's that determined I will break my hand before he gets away from me.

I heard this on Breakfast Televison this morning. I heard someone was walking their unmuzzled dogs and they broke free from their leashes and attacked the horse and that injury was sustained to the horsse's legs. Animal control now has the dogs. Kevin Frankish reports it repeatedly in the morning and the second time I heard it there was no mention of the dog breed but the first time I heard it, I thought I had heard something about Pit Bulls - whether or not they knew it was a PB or not.

Did anyone hear last week about the Pit Bull that attacked a Pomeranian or Shih Tzu (small breed dog)??? Someone was walking the dog at night unmuzzled and it broke free(or wasn't leashed at all or something) and attacked the dog. The owner of the small dog was bitten trying to save his pooch. The owner has been fined and the dog is in animal control care.

I heard about this on BT this morning too. I'm not sure if they really were pitties or not, now it seems every dog that bites is in the media's eyes anyway.

I heard that the lady walking the pit bull that attacked and killed the shih tzu was not being fined because the dog was muzzled but somehow removed it.

For some reason, I could not access the star (I recall reaing they were going to change their url but they should at least have a redirection page!! - and I actually thought thestar.com was a pretty kewl url for them - beating out other newsapers (Maybe they got big bucks or something for it, lol) but I found the story in the To Sun:

http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2006/02/20/1452347-sun.html

It also made the CBC:

Well, the story I heard on the news tonight was that there were two dogs (leashed not muzzled) who bit a Police horse (very good looking huge horse) on all four legs... a pit bull (whatever that is) and a mastiffx. The pitbull will be held and probably be PTS after the hearing. The mastiff was released to the owner with condition of being muzzled.
That poor horse!! I hope that he continues to be able to work. However, the bites didn't look as bad as I thought they would.
It seems very unfair to put one of these dogs to sleep and not the other simply because of its breed. A sad story all round.

I feel awful for the police horse. Thankfully he will recover and be back to work very soon.

I really wish the media would get its info correct before publishing:

CP24 tells the story stating a woman was walking the dogs:
http://www.pulse24.com/News/Top_Story/20060220-006/page.asp

TheSun tells the story stating a man was walking the dogs:
http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2006/02/20/1452347-sun.html

Which was it? A man or a woman? How is the media supposed to be a good source of info when it can't even get the sex of the dog walker correct?!?!?!?!

I too wish they would have gotten the sex right.

It was a male. And was actualy a hired dog walker.

I put a call into a friend who is with the Mounted Unit...Trooper was pretty shaken up...But he will be ok...:thumbs up

The owner has been charged

I know there is a huge fine for anyone who hurts/harms/kills a Police Dog or Horse.

The fine is roughly $10.000

Thanks Mona for clearing those facts up. I'm glad to hear that Trooper will be okay. I'm sure that he is quite shaken up and might be a little traumatized by the whole ordeal. He is quite a beauty! I saw him on BT this morning and he is a magnificent looking horse!

Going by what Mona_B has shared, I have some thoughts.

The dogs were both unmuzzled, which, by law, is understandable for the Mastiff X, but not the pit bull. But the OWNER is being charged, when a hired dog walker was actually with the dogs at the time and should have muzzled the pb before taking it off the property. A professional dog walker should KNOW the law about this issue and I think is partially responsible for this fine of $10,000.00. If the owner hired this chap to walk the dog, then the owner should have provided and specified that a muzzle MUST be worn by the pb. If not, the dog walker should have taken the initiative to inform the owner of the law and also put a muzzle on the pb.

I think the responsiblity in this case should be shared.:pawprint:

Just so you know, this isn't an open shut case...There is so much more that is being considered at this time.

I don't even know if this was a pro walker,or if the owner had a friend do it.All the paticulars were not given to me cause they were still looking into all of this.:)

As for the owner being charged and not the dog walker, well that happens in alot of cases.

Say I got a friend to walk Tron for me while I was at work. And say he attacked someone, well it would be me who gets charged.Reason being,he's my dog and belongs to me.

Now as for this $10.000.00 fine, well I'm not sure if this includes dog attacks.

Beaglemom,I had the pleasure of riding one of those big beautiful horses many years ago.My BIL's old partner transfered over to the Mounted Unit(where Trooper is),so Brian asked if I wanted to ride one..Ummmmmm yeah.LOL...I was 17 at the time....So out come Countess,a beautiful black TB cross...She was HUGE....But it was an experience I will never forget.:)

lezzpezz, can you believe that there are actually some Pitty owners who don't know about the ban...I think they live in a cave or something....

mona_b, I sure do believe that there are MANY pb owners that haven't a clue about the ban and a bunch that don't give a damn and ignore it anyway! Thank you for the updated info....it will be interesting to see what happens and exactly what the facts are.

Thank you.
