Hello everyone.
I took my puppy (he's a rescue!) to the vet the other day and I just can't get my head around what I was told.
The assisstant/receptionist told me that its possible to have more than one father for a litter..???
Just seems outrageous to me!
She said that if the female is 'with' more than one male while in heat she could have individual eggs fertilized by two different sperm and therefore have puppies from 2 guys at once??
What's that all about?????
I'd appreciate some feedback on this just to clarify.
Thanks all!:thumbs up

Yep... Because the uterus has horns and multiple eggs, the sperm of one can race up one horn and fertilize the eggs up there while the sperm from another donor can race up the other one. There can also be more than two sperm "donors" that fertilize. Once in the uterus, it's the fastest swimmers that beat out the rest, and they don't necessarily all have to be from the same dad.

It is not really outragous - just think back to your intro to bio in univ or college. If a dog is fertile and in heat, she can mate with several males during that time period and give birth to a variety of Heinz57 puppies, who could all potentially have different dads. It is yet one more factor to consider when searching for a good breeder - millers and backyard breeders don't much care - as long as the sire "looks like" whatever breed it is they are peddling and they can get their registration papers from those paper making mills (not to be confused with the ones that truly ARE meaningful tho some not so good breeders even are registered with the CKC or its US equivielent but there is another one with the same initials but it is NOT THE primary group we think of that hosts and organizes shows around he country.)
The same is true for cats - maybe even more so because once she goes thru it once with a a Tom, a Queen is anxious (since she is in heat) for the cosest Tom - guess that must be where the term "catting around" comes from tho I admittedly never thought about it. (Thinking of that song Life No 9 by Martina McBride - I am not really a country music fan per se but I do like some of Martina's stuff and before the days of MP3's and dling, I actually had two of her CD's (and gadget person that I am, I actually waited awhile to buy a CD player - had so many casettes, lol - (and still do have them - maybe a century from now, my recently newborn niece can go on whatever The Antiques Road show has morphed into by then and make a mint, hehheh).
But I always thought terms like "catty" , "cat fight" and "cattin' around" were rather sexist tho I guess where a Queen in heat is concerned, she really takes on all the Toms who themselves are staking out their territory and she truly ensures they know she is there ,
On that note, I better get some work done. It is -35 with the wind chill this AM - throughout the Maritimes. I am blaming it on one of the hosts at CBC Radio (in Halifax) who aceded to a request from a caller who wanted winter songs. We have been jinxed since then - we had spring weather for so long and I hope it is not over. Granted, shubenacadie Sam predicted an early spring so I hope the little guy is correct - I am counting on that rodent, lol

I NEVER watc those God awful daytime shows. I guess I have enough drama in my own life, lol - boring as it is. I don;t understand why ppl would go on national TV to dicuss such peronal issues. One of our nurses used to tape a couple she was working during the day(and I forget the names so it's useless for me to even try to recall) but she gave up when she turned on the set and the topic was lesbian nuns. That was it for her - no more silly shows, lol
