I have an adorable 10 week old mini dachsund/yorkie mix. I haven't had a dog in over 20 yrs and I have a few questions. I have been working with him since we got him on Feb 5 on potty training. He still has accidents in the house which I know is normal but how long does it take for them to become potty trained. I reward him when he goes outside and praise him. Also this may be a dumb question but when do they start barking. I have never heard him bark yet and I just know its gonna be a cute one when he does.

You have a mix of two barky breeds, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth!:p

As for housetraining, these breeds can be difficult, so dont' expect him to be really reliable until 6 months or more.

If he's having accidents in the house, it means you are not taking him out often enough, or watching him closely enough. Every accident he has enforces him to go in the house, so try and avoid them.

I've heard smaller breeds are much harder to house train than big dogs (probably because every time a big dog pees, it's liters and liters so it's very noticeable...)

As for the barking, please don't wish for it. Once they start, it's very, very hard to shut them up. :D

Agree with Prin. When Abby came into our home (rescue) she didn't bark, didn't play, just layed around. When the second rescue came in a year later (toy poodle that barks), Abby started making up for lost time with her vocal chords.:)

The neighbour always gave them little treats when she saw what do they do now....when they see her down the street start barking and run to see her. They will not stop barking until "treat" is given. Talk about spoiled. Sure didn't take Abby long to figure this one out.;)

Thanks for your responses. So far today we haven't had any accidents. I am really trying to keep an eye on him.
