8 Month Old Cat Hangs Out in Litter Box

Hi all,

We have an 8 month old kitten that we got as a present for christmas. He came from a good home and was not in a cage or anything like that before we got him, though coming to live with us was the third time he had moved in 6 monthes.

Now, two monthes after he came to live here, he has started hanging out in his litter box. He doesn't sleep there, either. He just lies down in the litter and hangs out there until we do something to get him out. It doesn't matter to him whether it's clean or dirty either...he just plops down and gets comfortable. Other than this, he exhibits all the trademarks of a very happy and content kitty.

Has anyone else ran across this behaviour in their cats? What does it mean?

Thanks!

I have personally never seen a healthy cat lounging in a dirty litterbox.

I would and try and stop this. Maybe a covered litterbox might do the trick....? You can also get him a comfy cat bed and put it in a place that may attract him, maybe next to a window so he can look out.

Thanks!

We built him a little cave and perch to explore next to the balcony window, but that didn't seem to help. He was only mildly interestd, then went back to hanging out in his litter. Interestingly enough, we started to supplement his dry food diet with wet food twice a day and now he only goes in the box to do his business. Success!
