Problem that I haven't encountered before

I am the owner of Kizzy a ginger male (neutered) 4 year old cat. He has never had a problem before and is seen on a regular basis for his health and shots. Just lately I noticed him dragging his back end on the carpets like a dog when they have worms. Is it possible that he has worms too? I also notice that he is not as clean around the backside. There are always little poopy areas in the fur around his butt. Can you tell me if I need to take him to the vet or is there something else I should be doing? Many thanks for your help.

Does he go outside? If so, he probably has worms. Any constipation or diarrhea? He could also have an anal gland problem.

I would start by taking a stool sample to the vet for analysis and take it from there.
