Sad Story

I came across this story on an adoption website. It is so sad it makes me want to cry.

The story of Amra is a sad one. She was dropped off at the shelter one day after spending seven loyal years with her owner. She was so distressed that she vomited and was sick for several days, and refused to even come out of her kennel to be walked. When she finally did venture out, she would only walk a block or two, before wanting to go right back. It was as if she was worried her owner might return while she was gone and she would miss him. Amra waited, but he did not return.

After some time passed, Amra tried to keep her spirits up and one day even played soccer in the backyard with the volunteers. It was the first time we had ever seen her play, or act a little bit like a normal dog. Shortly after that, she was transferred to another shelter and the stress of another change was too much for her. She again became ill.

The last straw occurred when Amra actually saw her owner, while at an SPCA event. She was so upset, as she just could not understand why she could not go home with him. The SPCA contacted her owner to tell him how upset she was and that her health was ailing. He did not return their call.

Amra was put to rest, as she was dying of a broken heart. Rest in peace sweet Amra and know that you were loved by all of the volunteers during the short time that you were with us. It is the seniors who often suffer the most. They spend their entire lives being good, loyal dogs just to find themselves abandoned in their later years, and they cannot adjust to the shock. Please remember that animals are a life long commitment, not just for as long as it suits your life.
