Very Hard Dog Biscuits:seeking Easy Recipe Please

Can anyone help me? I would appreciate receiving any very easy recipes for very hard dog biscuits for dogs? Thank you. :love:

I"m no baker, but I make these cookies all the time because they are so easy, and my dog adores them. You could probably make them harder by leaving them in the oven longer.

I like to add some parmesan cheese but you dont' need to!

1/3 cup margarine
3 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powder skim milk
1/4 tsp garlic powder
3/4 c water, room temp
1 egg beaten

In a large bowl, cream margarine and flour. set aside
In another bowl - dissolve skim milk in water, add garlic powder and whisk in egg
Make well in center of flour mix. Stir in egg mixture. Blend well.

Knead dough on floured surface until it's easy to work with.

Roll out to 1/4" and 1/2 inch thickness (Thinner for harder cookies)

Cut with cookie cutters
Grease cookie sheet
bake 50 min. at 325

I've 3 big 'uns so I make these in bulk - you can adjust the recipe to suit:

4 cups whole wheat flour
6 cups instant oatmeal
1 tbsp baking powder
3 cups grated apples (food processor is the easiest way to grate)
3 tbsp molasses
10++ heaping tbsp of peanut butter (the "just peanuts" kind - no sugar added)
2 tbsp olive oil
apple juice if needed

Mix all your dry ingredients together thoroughly then start adding in your wet stuff. I usually end up mixing it up with my hands. Not being a baker I smell the dough - if it doesn't smell "peanut-y" enough for me - I throw in some more peanut butter or add the apple juice if I find it dry, more flour if it's too wet. I usually put it in the fridge to stiffen up for about ten minutes as it's easier to roll out. Lightly flour my dough surface & roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch (your preference), use a pizza cutter to cut treats into little or big squares/ rectangles and bake them in a pre-heated oven @ 350. My oven runs hot so I check mine at 15 minutes at which time I flip them over as best I can and bake them for another 5-10-15 minutes (it depends on how thick they are). My dawgs luuuuvv them. You can play with the ingredients - ie. I've substituted sweet potatoes for the apples, homemade chicken broth for the peanut butter and minced garlic for the molasses.

My guy is little so I think that first recipe would work well for him. I don't need to make too many at once but I might try the PB recipe also and freeze some.

I have a question. I don't do dairy so my margarine, and my powdered milk and my parmesan cheese are all soy versions. Is that ok for a 7 pound shih tzu ? I wasn't sure if soy was an ok ingredient for him. I have all of the ingredients for those cookies in the house so I'd love to give them a whirl.

Yup ! I roll mine out to 1/4 inch and bake them at 350 until they are very hard - but, I do flip mine once I see they are brown on one side. Raw,beefy bones (big bones like cow shanks & hocks) are excellent for keeping teeth clean if that's what you're after.

I have just printed out all of these recipes, so my babies are in for a few good treats, they will eat bought biscuits but Im sure they will enjoy these home baked ones better-- thanks for posting them.:thumbs up

I know this thread is really old... just thought I would post mine for future browsers.

Here is the recipe for the dog treats I made. I sort of made it from looking at a combination of different ones. Brighton LOVES them. They didn't upset her little puppy stomach at all.

2 teaspoons dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
3 tablespoons dry parsley
1 can chicken broth (about 1 1/4 cups)
3 tablespoons honey
1 egg
2 tablespoons flax seed oil
6 cups brown rice flour + extra flour to make the dough not stick to the counter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in dried parsley, broth, honey, egg and oil. Slowly add flour until dough is stiff and easy to handle. You may need to add extra flour.

Divide the dough into 4 parts, this will make it easier to roll out. Roll out one ball of dough at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut them into desired shapes using cookie cutters. You could also make little squares if you don't have small cookie cutters. Place cookies onto an ungreased cookie sheet about 1/4 inch apart.


Depending on the size the baking time will vary. I use cookie cutters that are about an 1" to 1 1/2". Bake for 18-20 mins on one size, remove from oven, turn over and re-bake the other side for about 5-7 mins until a dark golden brown. You can freeze extras if you aren't going to feed them to your dog within a few weeks.
