 ok i give up!! I can't find the spot!

I came back from my holiday vacation the other day and the person I got to take care of the cats didn't do a good job at cleaning the litter box.I guess I wasn't thorough enough with my instructions. When I walked in the apartment it smelled like urine. I cleaned it all up but I STILL smell it. I suspect my little ladies peed somewhere in the living room due to the yucky litterbox.

Can you blame them?!?!? :(

I've sprayed around with Febreeze but i STILL smell it. I can't find the spot to clean it up. I gave up sniffing each corner of the room as I am not a doggy hehehe

Anyone had this problem before? How do I get rid of the smell?

Jiorji,it could be that the smell from the dirty box is still lingering...or if that's not it,I read somebody mentioning a"black light"which detects any urine on a carpet.
I've been looking for one myself but cannot find it in the stores.

that would be true but the litterbox is in the bathroom and oddly enough the bathroom doesn't smell.

I was thinking of black light myself. Will have to do an eBay search

Actually I would recommend hitting the mall to be honest, stores like Spencer's Gifts and Hot Topic (or the Northern equivalent) may have them in stock (playing to the college crowd - I had one too when in Uni). Also, is there a draft in the bathroom? It could be that the litter pan (if plastic) is retaining the smell and it's wafting elsewhere due to a draft?

It sounds like your cat did pee outside of the box.
As you cant find the location of the misdeed:) , maybe try applying an odour neutralizer such as Nature's Miracle in all the corners, and along the perimeters of the living room - the most likely areas.

I'd also go with a black light and an extension cord.

Everywhere stocks them.. even walmart pretty frequently. Easier to get it locally than on ebay.

Most pet stores have black lights. Look in the lizard sections. DON"T BUY THE ONES THAT LOOK LIKE LIGHT BULBS! Only the ones that are tubes work (fluorescent tubes). Just buy a tube at the pet store, and then buy the fixture to put it in at Canadian tire.

Also, outdoors stores will have them as you can buy "black light" flash lights as well.

I sometimes find that when the litter box in our house starts to smell, the room that its in sometimes doesn't smell as bad as other areas adjacent and I know the cats are not going elsewhere. I attribute that to the air moving around in our house since we have an air exchanger. Could be that the litter box is due for a thourgh cleaning by removing old litter, washing it out and puting new litter in it.

that sounds like a bit of money for my little student budget.

But luckily I think I got rid of the smell!:fingerscr I think....so far. I febreezed the heck out of my apartment. Every little spot. So far I haven't smelled it, so maybe it worked.

I hate to break it to you, but if your kitty did pee outside the box Febreeze won't do the trick. Unless you can find the spot and use a cleaner like Nature's Miracle, the smell will keep coming back. They sell fluorescent black lights at Canadian Tire. I bought one there last week for $14.99.

I bought my black light at PetSmart a few years ago just after they gained popularity so cost more than $14.99. Sounds good. And yes it will show the spot. Also you will definitely need a serious pet urine cleaner. Febreze won't do it. I saw Nature's Miracle cat formula - I just buy the dog one and hope it is doing double duty. Re air circulation, when our 22 lb. cat uses his litter box and the furnace kicks on, I know he has been in it - and so does the dog.

you need to use an emzyme digestor, not sure if natures miracle is one, treating just the carpet will help short term, but if the urine is in the under pad then the smell will return, wait till a humid day in summer, the under pad should go,also the urine nedds to be removed and not just covered up,rent a carpet cleaning machine, just my two cents but i have experience with these things as i own a carpet cleaning company, good luck
