rectal wound with tunneling in cat

My 9 yr old male neutered cat has an open wound on the right lower side of his rectum. You can see that it is tunneling up in the wound. I just discovered it today. It's difficult to see if there is any drainage because he is a very clean cat. I'm quite worried as it looks bad. I have an appt with my vet tomorrow but am very concerned. Any thoughts as to what it could be? He does go outside and doesn't appear to be sick.

Sounds like he passed something sharp, or too large to pass easily. Ouch! Poor kitty, it sounds uncomfortable.

Good news I think. The vet said it looks like a bite or scratch that got infected and formed an abcess that burst. 2 weeks on antibiotics and he should be fine...thank goodness!

Yes, tom cats like to bite other male cats on or near the base of the tail, and abcesses form quickly.

Your cat is getting older and I fear this is going to happen to him more frequently, so it might be better to keep him in, at least at night.
