Butt Stink?

My 10 month old male Siamese has always had a stinkier bum than my older female cat. At first I thought it was just the "special boy smell" as it seems to be especially strong when we're petting him and he's purring and immensely enjoying the love session. He was neutered right at 6 months so I don't think he's getting.... worked up? that way (I hope!).

He's also a cat who likes to stick his bum in your face when he's all happy during these love sessions. The smell is sometimes quite strong and I run away gasping for air. It doesn't smell like a sick smell or a poopy smell. I don't know if it's leftover pee, hormonal stuff or anal glands.

So my question is, is this normal for a cat? Or maybe a boy cat in general? Are they anal glands that need to be looked after? He's in good health and doesn't seem to be bothered by anything so it's not a priority for me right now to take him to the vet. I also never mentioned it to the vet before because it didn't occur to me then, to ask about it but he didn't say anything about a particularly offensive smell. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

Thank you if you've got any input!

An offensive smell to one person may not be the same for another so I would ask family or friends to tell you what they think of the smell. Any time you are worried about the health of your pet it is always best to have your vet take a look. It may or may not be something worth investigating further. It could possibly be the anal glands. Has he always had this smell or is it something fairly new.

I try not to smell his butt ;) but it seems like something he's always had. Sometimes it seems stronger and other days I don't really notice it much. Sometimes after I've been holding him, the area on my arm where his butt was will smell and I'll go nuts scrubbing with soap and water.

Like I said, the vet never mentioned it when we went for his shots, and then neutering so I assume it's nothing serious. My husband smells it too when he can get away from his work to play with the kitty.

I don't know, it's really not that big of a deal when I read about other people and their pet's serious illnesses and issues. It's mostly an inconvenience, like a friend's nasty fart that makes you gasp for air and clear the room. Was just wondering if anyone has/had a cat like that. :yuck:

tip #72 on this website explains pheromones. Check it out and you may find this may explain your problem and it may not just be coming from the anal area.

It is an excretion cats give off in all the area you stated you were petting. They do this for various reasons....marking, pleasure, sending and leaving messages etc.
