Cat Diagnosed with Epilepsy

October 16th, 2005, 11:18 PM
I have a 3 year old cat named Echo who was diagnosed today after having two sever seizures in the last two days. Her blood work showed nothing that would be causing the seizures. They started her on medication to control the seizures today and I was allowed to go see her for a short five minute period. She looked very disoriented, and out of sorts. Actually, she acted drunk. I was told that it could be a side effect of the medication, or that she might have some brain damage. The vet seems very reluctant to give me any positive answers about anything. I need to know how I can tell if she has brain damage and what I can do. I would also appreciate any information that i could get about the epilepsy. I know that it is very rare in cats, and it can be treated, but what are the side effects of the drugs and the seizures and is there anything I can do to counteract the side effects of the drugs. Please help. I am so worried about my cat.

Most anti-seizure drugs will cause drowsiness, at least initially. Here are a couple of websites you can get started with.

Feline Epilepsy Website (

Yahoo support/info group on Feline Epilepsy (

Yahoo support groups can be really helpful - not only the support from people who know what you're going through, but there tend to be a lot of VERY knowledgable people in these specialized groups.

Good luck.
