YIKES!! A Skunk Sprayed My Boy!

October 14th, 2005, 05:50 PM
Well it finally happened..... the skunk who has been ravishing my garbage outside lately has met Hercules. Apparently the skunk won :o Herc wasnt scratched or hurt and it didnt appear to be on his face or in his eyes, but MAN what a STINK :yuck:

I raced like a mad woman to Day Night pharmacy which was THANKFULLY open on Thanksgiving Day and bought 3 bottles of hydrogen peroxide. Raced home, mixed it with baking soda and dish liquid and off to the tub he went. It worked very well with only a very faint residual odor. We plan to re-bathe him so hopefully the odor will be completely gone. Thank goodness my husband was home because all I could do was retch and gag. It was the most offensive odor I have ever had the misfortune of smelling. :yuck:

Now that it's been a few days and I know he's ok, I guess I can laugh.... the spray seemed to have gotten him in the rear end, and all I can picture is Herc (aka Marmaduke) bounding after this little rodent and at the last minute the skunk must have turned and hissed or something, for Herc to turn around and get it in the rear rather than in the face. I hear those suckers can spray up to 12 feet or something

Although the peroxide/b. soda/ dish liquid worked very well, if anyone knows of any better solutions to get rid of the smell, it would be greatly appreciated! :thumbs up

It's actually quite pleasant when very dilute.

Our Akita/husky mix had a run in with a skunk last weekend! Sargent won the battle. He killed the skunk :( (no brutality) and managed to escape with very little skunk smell on him! I don't think the skunk saw him coming. He's like a cat when it comes to prey in his territory.

My Eskie and I came eye to eye with the skunk who lives next door but for some reason the skunk decided to give us a pass. I too am ready with all of the baking soda and peroxide. Regrettably my husband opened one of my big bottles not realizing it will eventually turn to practically water so had better replenish. My first choice would be to take him to Groomer or Vet if open - especially if face is hit and I have not doubt it will be. Plan B will be the soda and peroxide - giant cloud of it according to Groomer - then repeat with soap or dog shampoo added. A white dog sprayed is not a pretty sight. The smell will eventually fade. The lovely man who cleans our eavestroughs every year was sprayed - literally - the skunk got him as well as the dog - 5 times last year. Raccoons and skunks are becoming increasingly bold - especially now that we are on the Green Bin program.

U can also try a tomato juice bath. I cuts the smell. My old alaskan malamute got into it with one yrs ago. It took the smell out but he also kept try to eat juice. :D
