Commercials that hit you?

September 27th, 2005, 11:12 PM
I was just wondering if anybody saw the commercials for ALS? I find them so sad... You know the ones: "Most people with ALS lose the ability to use their arms (or legs depending on the commercial) within the first year. What would you do while you still could?"

Are there other commercials that affect you? In a sad way, funny way, happy way, or angry way?

September 27th, 2005, 11:23 PM
That one is sad.
I love the current Winners add with the two female co-workers discussing possible men in their company. SOOO funny!! (I found all the previous WInners commercials of this style annoying, and I know I'll get sick of this one, but for now, it's my favorite)

September 27th, 2005, 11:29 PM
"You're so picky!" :D

September 27th, 2005, 11:30 PM
Oh- one that totally makes me cringe is the Cadbury one- they are sooo trying to rip off Willy Wonka. He has the purple coat and everything.

September 27th, 2005, 11:33 PM
Uggh yes for the "cadburry thins"? Don't even get me started on that one: I hate the adds, but I think the whole product is stupid! It's just a mini chocolate bar for goodness sakes! You're paying the same amount of money for a smaller piece of chocolate. It's not even higher quality chocolate. But oh wait: It's only 100 calories!!! Nevermind that if you bought a bigger bar, you could break off a piece that is 100 calories.

September 27th, 2005, 11:34 PM
You pay for them to measure it out for you. And the other one? Peanut butter? Helloooo! It's been done! (i.e. Reeces pieces??)

September 28th, 2005, 06:58 AM
One of my favorites is the Ikea commercial that shows an old lamp on the side of the road, the wind is blowing, rain pounding the side of it. In the window above is a nice new lamp, but the poor old one is left in the cold. A guy comes by and says something along the lines of "How many of you feel bad for this lamp? That's because you're crazy ... it has no feelings". Hopefully this link will work: OR (quality of the second one is a bit better)

There is also a commercial for a childrens hospital or it may be for the Wal-Mart Childrens foundation, or something similiar (Note to advertisers: if a person remembers the commercial but not the 'product' then it is NOT an effective commercial!) that has clips of adults saying "I was one", the last shot is of a very sweet little girl who says "I am one". This one always gets to me because "I was one" as well.

September 28th, 2005, 07:07 AM
The commercial for MADD with the little baby crying in her crib, and then the text explaining that her mom was killed by drunk drivers. *BAWL* every time.

The one I hate the most ... the absolute cheesiest, worst graphics, makes me actually change the channel ... Weed Man! :yuck:

September 28th, 2005, 07:41 AM
The one where the dog is chained up outside and is looking through the window at his family all snuggly and warm watching TV. It was on years ago, I can't remember which org. it was from....soooo sad

Ohhh and a newer one I absolutely hate is the one where the guy is eating something (I can't remember what) and repeatedly gets his hand jambed in the filing cabinet. I can't even watch. >.<

September 28th, 2005, 07:48 AM
That one with the girl screaming when she sees the maple leaf drives me nuts. I change the channel everytime it comes on.

September 28th, 2005, 07:50 AM
I dont remember what the commercial is for. It the one where the dog and the cat are in the kitchen and the owner comes home and there is garbage everywhere and the dog gets scolded. But then its really the cat that messes up the garbage to get the dog in trouble.

My youngest son knows the eggo french toaster stick commercial by heart. He even recites it in a heavy french accent its hillarous. "Your not french I am french....he then finishes it off by saying its part of a complete breakfast.

September 28th, 2005, 07:52 AM
Commercial I hate

The one for Cialis where the cab driver is waiting, the older couple finally come out and they have little smiles on their faces, and he says "she couldn't decide what to wear."

September 28th, 2005, 07:59 AM
I think this one is hillarious (I can't tell you what it's for, or it will ruin the suprise):

September 28th, 2005, 08:02 AM
Here's one for you cat-lovers out there

September 28th, 2005, 10:00 AM
Oh! More commercials that make me cringe:
- Bad Boy - Who can think up a worse marketing campaign? Nooooooobody!!
- If you ever watch The Price is Right at 11:00 on a channel from BC (sorry, can't remember which one), you'll see commercials for Dodd's Furniture & Mattress - honestly, they had to purposely be going for the cheese factor, because no one can watch these commercials and say, "Wow! What a great idea!".

September 28th, 2005, 12:52 PM
A couple years ago, Geico had the funniest commercial--the one with the hound dog (blue tick????) behind the wheel of a pickup truck. He goes veering off the road toward a pond filled with ducks/geese; all the while, his owner is in the passenger seat screaming "MOTHER OF PEARL!!!!!!!!" That one always cracked me up.

September 28th, 2005, 12:54 PM

A conclusion I have come to after many years of TV watching is that for some odd reason, selling mattresses=totally moronic advertising. Now, why is that?

September 28th, 2005, 01:14 PM
I cannot stand the"Sleep Country"lady, she's sooo bad.But I got all teary eyed for that poor little lamp on the IKEA commercial :D
I also get a bit perturbed when they show 20yr olds needing wrinkle-removal creme.. If they could remove my wrinkles, now that would be a good testimony for the cream :D

September 28th, 2005, 01:26 PM
I like that new one where the rabbits are playing cards, and are using carrot chips for money chips.

September 28th, 2005, 02:05 PM
One that gets me laughing is an older car commercial where he parks his car at the grocery store and someone accidentily sends a careening cart towards his car and all you see is this guy run full speed at the cart and tackle it.

And who can forget the Molson Canadian commericial

Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....
I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....
and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.
I speak English and French, not American.
And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.
I believe in peace keeping, not policing,
diversity, not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,
and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!
The first nation of hockey!
and the best part of North America

My name is Joe!!
And I am Canadian!!!

Makes me want to stand up at the TV and clap. Go joe GO. Or break into the national anthemn

September 28th, 2005, 02:13 PM
I'm with tobster's mom for one's that make you think. I think there were 2 of them.. along the same lines liek that at one point.. Was advocation animal compasion, not to buy one for xmas.. and the horror of locking a family member outside. *cries*

One I miss cause it amused me was one on showcase for showcase.. It was a bunch of people thanking showcase for letting them unleash their kinky side. Amused the heck out of me..

September 28th, 2005, 03:49 PM
Or the new Dairy Queen one where dad is eating the burger and feeding the baby with a fake arm...too funny!

September 28th, 2005, 06:55 PM
the funny part of the "I am Joe" commercial is that the guy playing Joe is an american actor....notice you don't see it anymore? And the guy touring in his place when the commercial first came out was a canadian replacement, the s#$@ hit the fan when it was discovered *L*

September 28th, 2005, 07:21 PM
I saw a commercial a few day ago , where its a take off on Extreme makeover home edition. They bring the bulldosers in and demolish this house, then they ask this guy how he feels and the guy says, thats not my house - thats my house! (pointing to the house across the street)

love my dogs

I KNOW! LOL, me too....that one bugs the heck out of me!!

There is a new dog food commercial, and the dog is dancing around in the kitchen. The owner and his friend/neighbour are standing there watching, and the friend says.."my dog doesn't do that".

Owner says " well my dog really likes his food"

friend says " well I feed my dog healthy food"

owners says something like "well this food is healthy and tastes great too"

I just love that one. I laugh everytime.

September 28th, 2005, 07:45 PM
I just saw a commercial that got me. It was for "sick kids" and they have different children, doctors, health care workers, etc singing "lean on me" it really got me.

A funny one, which is similar to the buldozer one: The add was for snickers or some other chocolate bar, and it's a guy standing next to a really nice car, eating s chewy chocolate bar. Then this girl comes by and totally smashes the car. She gets out and freaks out, appologizing like crazy, and the guy just says "meh, it's ok" and so she gives him her #, to "call her sometime". She then drives off. He looks at the smashed car, takes two steps forward, the camera pans out, and you see him unlock and get into a really beat up piece of junk car, parked infront of the nice one.

September 28th, 2005, 11:43 PM
love my dogs.. it's for kibbles n bits.. I nearly dies laughing over that one..

September 28th, 2005, 11:49 PM
So far, I feel the same way. I change for the leaf lady- how annoying.

I have to admit, I like the Pedigree commercials. They're cheezy, but my doggy gets the front seat and I go outside when it's raining too. Too bad the product is so cruddy.

I LOOVE the IKEA ones. Have you heard the radio ones? Something like "We now have pasta for 99 cents. Or you could get a combo. Get a sofa for $300, or get the combo of sofa and pasta for $300.99." (That's not it exactly, but you get the idea, right? It's hilarious.)

Oh and the old mastercard ones with the doggy. I liked those. Especially the part "Dog bed: $65" and the doggy is belly up on the sofa...

I also HATE the nike "45 second" commercial. Bad idea.

September 29th, 2005, 03:18 PM
I love the commercial where the guy is watching the game and his buddy is sleeping on the end of the same couch, he grabs his buddy, pulls him over his lap and starts scratching his chest! Then it says "some things you just cant do with your buddies, go to your local shelter and rescue a friend today"

There is also one where a guy has all his toys set up and is playing with them then he says something like "oh no, the attack of the kitty etc etc" and he takes his huge orange cat and puts him in the toys and makes all htese bombing sounds. Its quite cute and again it says something along the lines of how fun a rescue cat is and you should pick up your friend at the local humane society.

I love those ones!

September 29th, 2005, 03:19 PM
I like that new one where the rabbits are playing cards, and are using carrot chips for money chips.

I love this one too! You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em (the commercial is for flip phones)

and the Rock Star Bunnies.

September 30th, 2005, 08:33 AM
I always laugh at this one. Dairy Queen ran a commercial for their moolatte drinks showing a lady doing blindfolded taste tests. They tell her that she is done and to put the drink down. She gets up and start to run away, still blindfolded, only to crash into the window. As she is falling, there is a smear of the drink going down the window.

I like the DQ one for kids' day or whatever where the little girl is like "Try this one," and the dad is all, "I think I tried that one already" and she says really sternly, "Try it again!"

September 30th, 2005, 12:44 PM
I like the DQ one for kids' day or whatever where the little girl is like "Try this one," and the dad is all, "I think I tried that one already" and she says really sternly, "Try it again!"

There is another one with a kid playing basketball with his father. Father tells him that if he makes the shot they will go for a blizzard. Kid keeps missing, father keeps begging him to make the shot. Finally he pulls the net down, has it right in front of the kid, who proceeds to put all his might into throwing the ball. The ball rising above the backboard and takes the father right in the kisser.

I think DQ may be on to something. They've had quite the run of funny commercials lately.

September 30th, 2005, 12:46 PM
I just hope people buy their stuff... Otherwise they'll change the ads...

They're dumb sometimes though. Like GAP dropped Sara Jessica Parker because their sales dropped while she was the spokesperson. Well, did anybody think that MAYBE the clothes for that year were just hideous? They were! They were horrible. She shouldn't take the blame for bad designing.

September 30th, 2005, 01:08 PM
Actually I hate the DQ ads - not so much for the ads as for the message they are sending to kids and sadly adults - just image what one of those cheesecake blizzards would do to one's arteries. Actually the thought of one makes me sick. DQ is of course not the only culprit. In 1980 when I still lived in Ottawa I participated in one of those surveys - you know where some poor woman has to grab people in mall to view a presentation - "payment" was a ticket for Wintario. So just in case - and because I felt sorry for her, I did it. Actually won $1,000 on my ticket. I was shown 15 commercials and asked to recall the products. I scored 100. Well I do have a good memory. Her opinion was that the commercials effectively sold the product. She was wrong - I remembered the products because I found the commercials obnoxious. I admit though to liking the commercial where the dog is blamed for the damage caused by the cat and then takes a Polaroid of the cat in action. Reminds me of my spiteful cat.

September 30th, 2005, 01:45 PM
THe problem is, most companies think that their ads are great even if you hate them. The point is remembering them- they don't go unnoticed.

September 30th, 2005, 02:10 PM
I agree with Snowdancer, I can't stand the message the DQ ads are sending. I cringe whenever I see them, especially the one with the woman who ends up with moolate allover her face. She looks and acts so much like a compulsive overeater in the ad that I can't believe they actually run it.

September 30th, 2005, 03:59 PM
Re:" the funny part of the "I am Joe" commercial is that the guy playing Joe is an american actor....notice you don't see it anymore?" (One of these days I'll figure out how to quote, lol)

Actually, though, the fellow who played Joe is a very proud Canadian who was born and grew up in Truro, Nova Scotia, a small town about an hour from Halifax. Jeff Douglas ,born June 8, 1971 has also had starring roles as Professor Zachary in Strange Days at Blake Holsey High and as Cubby in The Famous Jett Jackson. (Both of which I admit I have never watched, lol)

Here is that ad:

My sister and many ppl in the Boston area loved those series of ads - the fight at the office etc. Has anyone seen the spoofs - I am NOT Canadian - (by a Quebecer), I am Torontian, I am an American, I am Albertan and so forth.

As for ads - I like the one where the dog blames the cat but I would not say it is a fav. A few yrs ago, there was an ad on the Superbowl which I watched online since I only watch either half time or the ads - not knowing or caring that much about football. I dled it because it was hilarious - it used the theme from Gilligan's Island and shows Gilligan coming to the rescue because he had th coast guard on speed dial but then gets left behind AGAIN for some reason. It was an At & T ad I think. VERY cute! I do not know if it got an air time in Canada.

When I was young, there was a cute ad for Glad garbage bags that shows this little guy dragging out the bag and kicking as he FINALLY manages to get it to the curb. One could not help but laugh!

I like the sappy ads too - the ones that tug at your heartstrings. It may be me but lately I find there are really stupid ads - that make no sense to me and loose me completely.

September 30th, 2005, 04:18 PM
I love the DQ one where the little baby headbunts the dad, I think that one is pretty halarious.

September 30th, 2005, 09:46 PM
Do you remember an add I think it may have been for dairy queen. The wife is making a cake, and then the husband tries to lick the beaters but the blender is still on, you hear him scream, then they are at dairy queen ordering a blizzard his speech is all impaired because of the blender mishap.

October 3rd, 2005, 06:51 PM
ooo there's a new one... A middle-aged guy is raking leaves and he falls back into them in slow mo' and then he gets a weird look on his face and starts smelling his arms and then he looks over at the doggy... :D (I don't know what the product is though...)

October 4th, 2005, 07:48 AM
Prin,I saw that one too,it took me a couple of showings to get the doggies part in it(what can I say  ).
I believe it's trying to show that salespeople are just like you and I,think it was a car dealership..

October 4th, 2005, 11:09 AM
Yes! It was Toyota! Thanks Chico. Ya, he falls in the leaves, but it's not just leaves... I can't tell you how many times I've done that as a kid. Ahhh, doggies. :)

October 4th, 2005, 11:35 AM
the one with the cars in the parking lot where they keep opening the doors and you can hear music then they clos it and the other car plays its tunes....i HATE that one!!!
there's no way that if you were to turn the volume to max you'd still be able to sit in the car. Unless well you drive my 1991 Ford Wagon lol

October 4th, 2005, 05:28 PM
My cousin-in-law's old Chevy Nova had half a speaker left and only got AM... You could blast that all you wanted...

There's also no way you blast a radio in the cheapest GM (or was it pontiac?) sedan and not get a "disturbing the peace" ticket.

October 4th, 2005, 10:45 PM
I loved the one for I think Kodak a few years back. Has like 1000 shades of red in one picture.. Dalmation wearign a red collar with a red fire hydrant by a red fence.. etc.

October 7th, 2005, 09:17 PM
So it's actually a pretty bad commercial, but I really like the new Ikea ad with the Swedish voice over of "different strokes". It's nothing special to watch, but it makes me laugh in one of those "what the heck is wrong with that girl who is cracking up at nothing" ways. That sort of thing makes me happy :)

October 7th, 2005, 09:21 PM
I haven't seen that one yet. On tv?

October 7th, 2005, 09:23 PM
yes, but i've only seen it on channels 521, 603 and 618

that would be.... lemme check....
TLC, Food Network Canada and Prime
The visual aspect is boring and I don't really watch it, I just like the voice over

October 8th, 2005, 07:40 AM
Ahhh, the IKEA commercials :clown: Being Swedish I am a little biased, but I think they are often the "sad little lamp"
However, everybodys idea of a Swedish accent, gives me a chuckle...I could not speak like that even if I tried :D and yes,I speak Swedish with a few Swedish friends!

October 8th, 2005, 01:30 PM
You feel sorry for the little creamer? :D

October 8th, 2005, 04:45 PM
The commercial that really hits me is the one for Sick Kids Hospital, and they use the song "Lean on Me". Since our son spent some time at Sick Kids Hospital, it always gets me misty, especially since the staff were absolutely the best!

October 8th, 2005, 07:08 PM
We have our own song for our hospital :) but during one telethon, we used the song Angels Among Us. Tugged at the heartstrings akright. A local duo - Sons of Maxwell, another great Celtic group, created a song as well and the proceeds went to the hospital. Called Delicat.

November 18th, 2005, 11:52 PM
AHHHHHH when this thread started, it made me think of a commercial that drives me crazy, but I couldn't quite place it. I saw it just now. It's for Muslix Cereal, and it ivolves two young (girls? i dont know) singing a horrible rendition of Eric Benet's Dust in the Wind. Arrrghh the worst, most annoying commercial ever created:evil:

November 18th, 2005, 11:56 PM
I think that one is funny. Of course, I don't plan on having kids so I can laugh because when the commercial ends, they end.:D

I forgot before but there is one, I think for insurance or a bank, where there is an elephant dancing in the rain. It's really cute. He's really agile and light on his feet.:D

Oh and there's a new one where there is a guy vacuuming and his wifey comes in with a tiny dog on a leash and without him seeing, she undoes the leash. He accidentally sucks up the dog leash and thinks he sucked up the doggy....
