Who can help

Hi all,

I've just bought a book called "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets" but I was confused by the vitamin requirements listed in page 82 when I compared it with AAFCO standard. For example, the book stated daily Vitamin A/D requiement for adult dog is 75IU/8IU per kg body weight but AAFCO said it should be 5000IU/500IU, the difference is more than 60 times.

As you know excess amount of vitamin A & D is harmful and the information I can get here in Hong Kong (sorry I'm not Canadian....). So, can someone help me?

I think the AAFCO standards are per kg of dog food on a dry matter basis.

Don't forget that dog foods are cooked at a very high temp and most of the vitamins break down before your doggy gets to finally eat them.. :)

If you look here, there's a multivitamin, with 200iu of vitamin A and dogs have to take from 3 to 5 of these... So it looks like no matter what, they need tons...

You can check nutrient requirements on this page as well

They're taken from a book published by the National Research Council.

Hey, that's great! Finally, a source that doesn't back-source from the AAFCO... :)
