By quick way of introduction I own Max, who is a 5 year old "pit bull" cross who was rescued from the Humane Society approximately 4 years ago. I have been a "lurker" here on and off at pets.ca for about a year. While feeling quite down about everything in the current environment my girlfriend and I actually had a very positive experience today that I figured I'd share in these troubling times.
We took Max out for a nice 3 hour walk today and part of it was @ Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto. While we stopped to get some Fish & Chips (@ Chippys YUM I might add) 3 people off the street came up and asked me what Max was; "Excuse me is your dog a pit bull?" in fact. I stated that he was in fact a pit bull cross; and is one of the most loving pets I've had in my life. These same people then proceeded to ask me about the new law that had passed and I was pleased to answer their questions. I wont go on in too great detail, but the summation of the story was a man (who was admittedly a cat lover and not a dog person) stated that he couldn't believe our goverment was commiting what amounted to genocide. He was also appaled at how Max within about 50 days would have to be muzzled and on a 6ft leash at all times (thus making getting his exercise extremely difficult).
Does it change anything? No; but it was extremely refreshing to find a non-owner sympathetic soul out there.
That being said; Max and I will abide by this law (along with Max's mom; who is having a VERY hard time with the muzzle; because Max hates it and he really did nothing wrong). We will at the same time support every fight against it and try to educate everyone we can.
Hopefully this gives a bit of cheer to some other people in the same situation as it brought a small smile to one of the last muzzle free days in Max's future for us.
