:ca: Hello, my name is Don. We are starting a search for 2 pets; one dog and one cat. I have been a cat person for 50 years. What I am interested in is data on dog/cat compatibility. My son is wishing for a doberman. I understand that they come in different sizes. We also wish to have a cat. Has anyone any comments or advise?

WElcome to the forum good luck in finding your cat and dog. I havent heard of dobermens coming in two sizes. Would you mean a minature pinscher? Not to sure as I am not to familar with either breed, Anyway welcome. :)

You must be thinking of the minature pincher(min pin). These are not dobermans. The best thing you can do in your search is go to www.ckc.com and research select a breed. This will help you determine what breed will be suitable for your home/ lifestyle. Please don't pick your dog by looks alone. Are you looking for adults/ rescues. If so choose a dog who has already lived with cats. Same goes for choosing a cat, find one who has lived with dogs.

Also talk to breeders of the dogs you decide on and learn as much as you can about them before you get one.
If you decide on a doberman, be sure to either get a rescue (there are so many beautiful dobies that need homes ) or get from a reputable breeder- there are so many, SOOO many genetic diseases possible in Dobies, and a good breeder is the only way to avoid them if you want a puppy.
Here are some dobie resources:
Doberman club of Canada (http://www.dpcc.ca/)
