I just now logged on, do not know if you have been here today...I doubt it.

If you read from another location.....best wishes and stay safe. If by chance you are at home, Please get out now or by tomorrow am!....

We dodged the bullet again ..and I was only joking when I posted you were next...this has troubled me all day today. By now you know Katrina is heading your way with fury....

Please be safe, you and your family are in my prayers.

My friends in Ms. & New Orleans, La., have already evacuted today...

I will be watching here for any news about you and your family. Report back as soon as you can please...

My husband and I are in Mobile, Al right now, on a business trip. I'm from WI so hurricanes are new to me..... we were planning on going to New Orleans on Monday, but obviously i won't be making it there on this trip. :( We are planning on booking it to Texas tomorrow afternoon as everyone is warning against heading north. Pags, and anyone else who might be in Katrina's path, stay safe!

Just to let you know I got a email from Pags and she is fine, they are going to ride out the storm at home so lets all say a prayer for her and all our other friends down there that they will be safe. Pags is having some problems with her computer and couldn't get in here so she asked me to drop a line for all of you.

I wish she would reconsider...a short road trip inland will make a big difference.

We are crossing fingers, paws & everything we have for a safe ride-out of the hurricane...been there, done that many times.

Being a mom, Pags will not put her kids in dangers way...she knows best right now.

Catch ya on the flip side Pags....if you need anything afterwards...please find a way to make contact.

The storms are not near as bad as the aftermath...just an fyi.

Hey everybody. I'm gonna try this again. I keep having technical difficulties with the site. For about a week now I get DNS errors when I try to reach pets.ca... And then if I manage to actually get to the board my browser crashes while I'm composing messages. Groan. But all of that aside...

Thank you so much, Karin, for thinking of us. (And by the way - I'm really glad you've been able to dodge the last couple of these things!!) Thank you. And thank you everybody for any prayers and good wishes. We all need them down here right now. Also - doggy lover -- thanks for posting for me last night. I'm going to put my msn messenger ID in my profile before I leave here (if I don't crash first!!) so if any of you guys want to reach me .. try me there. We normally don't lose power here for a long long time because our lines are underground.. BUT I don't have a lot of faith in my DSL connection in inclement weather... So we'll see.

We're as ready as we're going to be and I hope that anyone else in the potential path has either made preparations or already evacuated. Many hugs to everybody!!!

Pags....Please get out now if you have not already. This is a monster storm and shows only signs of growing. This is already a disaster and she hasn't even made it to land yet.
Even the Weather Channel bimbos bailed out....and they live for this kind of reporting. We are getting the extreme outer bands again & will for the next two days and this monster is hundreds of miles away from us, SHE IS THAT HUGE!

My prayers are with everyone in Katrina's path. God help them all.

(All my friends are accounted for and left for safety....)

SSSHH! Chico hush! The season has only begun, I lost power 3 times and got bumped offline since I logged on after work, think sunny skies and no jinxing!

Enough joking around, Pag's area is now under a mandatory evacuation too. By midnight hurricane force winds will be plowing down the gulf coast and this will intensify and last for hours.
This is going to be a very rough night and many months of recovery to follow. This is so hard for us to fathom and we have been through what was thought the worst here...unimaginable. I am listening to the Eagles on tv right now because every channel is covering the hurricane...I was getting very stressed. (I am checking in on it from time to time)
The thought of an entire city the size of New Orleans being lost is crazy.

Highways are gridlocked, they are being told to get off now and find shelter. I know many strangers will open up their homes, it's human nature. God be with them all.

This is scary stuff. Karin, i don't know how you live with this year after year. We left Mobile, Al this morning and have been driving north all day. We were going to go northwest, as they were suggesting yesterday, but thankfully we caught the reports of the traffic problems before we left. I shudder to think of all of the cars still stuck in La trying to move west. We are safe in IL now and will be making the rest of the drive to WI tomorrow morning. Stay safe everyone!

Karin
August 28th, 2005, 10:08 PM
I'm going to try and sleep for a bit. The eye will be coming on shore in a few hours so reports will be a hit & miss until daylight.

One cool report earlier was from some hotel in La...they drained the hotels pool and turned it into a salt water aquarium to house some dolphins that were in dangers way and too late to turn loose. They made it there and were playing and snorting...it was aired by a phone cam. It should be on the news in the am. Much will be on the news in the am.

Not much more to see until tomorrow I'm afraid. This is where we transition to the flip side.

Gods speed and get it over with.

Even though you can't take your animals with you many animal shelters are taking them in until the hurricane is over. Houston ASCPA is one, we have a ton of animals coming in to stay until the storm is over. Not everyone can get their animals there but they do the best they can. They even have transports so you don't have to drop your animal off. They are kept in cages all over the floor and stacked on top of each other, but I'd rather my animal have that for a couple of days then be left alone to face the storm.

I know what you mean but it is better than the alternative. you can't take them to the storm shelters and most hotels will not permitt animals. I'd rather they be at the spca then alone in the house with the flood waters raising and the roof being torn off.

Some people can't do that. Some people don't have cars, or have families that make it so they can't. I mean if you have 3 kids an infant and older parents who have to come with you in a civic or something else small, taking a couple large dogs may just not work.

Katrina hit land again early this morning, and it looks like New Orleans didn't get the worst (I'm sure what they did get was plenty bad!) of it like they were predicting. The hurricane actually turned a little before it came ashore, and was a category 4 when it hit. I hope that Pags either heeded the mandatory evacuation or was someplace really, really safe when it hit. Even the superdome took a big hit with parts of the roof being torn off - and that's where they were housing all the folks who couldn't evacuate! Everyone that was in there is safe, although the rain is coming in.

Everyone keep their fingers crossed for all the people who will be effected by this. :grouphug: :fingerscr :grouphug:

The gulf coast Of Miss. took a very bad hit, right where Pags lives. I could hardly sleep last night. I worked 9 hours today but stayed glued to a tv that Carol brought in.

Pags....My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Most hotels/motels lift any pet ban they have.

Weathering a hurricane is bad enough, the aftermath is hell. The storm may be gone but the suffering continues, the faster it departs means fasterer restoration and helping those in need, and rebuilding. The full impact of Katrina will not be known for days.

((( PAGS! )))

The destruction in her area is unimaginable. It goes very far inland also. So far, the gulf coast of Ms. has the highest of fatalities, 30 alone in one apartment complex. In Biloxi the high storm surge may have washed many people out to sea when it retreated. One huge casino barge was washed inland & planted on top of the Holiday Inn, totally squashing the hotel.

Katrina makes all four hurricanes that hit my state last year look like a spring shower.
I am very worried about Pags, it could be months before she gets power back. If anyone hears from her, after posting the news here, please pm me. I will give you my cell number to give to her. We need a contact point with her somehow. I have friends who are setting up contact points with loved ones that fell victim also, a place where they can receive money, phone cards and other items they need. With no power there is no money. Even the wealthiest cannot access their accounts. If Pags got out in time I would like to send her a care package or 2 or 3....anything she needs to make life a little easier. Just need to know where she can receive them...

The Mayor of NOLA is about to announce a total evacuation of the city including the superdome. This morning the main levee at Lake Ponchatrain was breeched and the city will continue to flood. There is not enough National Guard forces to help bring water, food, medical supplies & ice to these people so they have to move. The water is already 3 feet high outside the superdome now.

As days go by it will only get worse. God be with all of them.

Here's hoping Pags is okay. (Just opened this thread and saw what it was about.)

We were in N'Awlins a few years ago and levees bustin' seemed to be at the back of everyone's mind even then, sort of a fatalistic approach to a potentially dire problem.

And here it is.

Best wishes to Pags and anyone else down there affected by this.

I would be happy to put a care package together too.

Karin I see you are a bit closer (compared to Canada) so if you would like me to help contribute to anything you send I would be more than happy to help. I don't have alot to give, but right now I feel I have a whole lot more than Pags may have..... PM if you want.

I just recieved an email from someone that was talking to Pags up until 9am yesterday, they had stayed home. The wind had blown plywood off their home but they were ok. Then the hydro went out, and later the flood surge, so we are still unsure if she is ok. The town she lives in was very hard hit. If anyone hears from her keep us posted, everyone is very worried and I'll let you know if I hear more. Let me know if you guys are sending money for her I'll chip in maybe we can send it to someone state side and they can pick up stuff for her and get it too them?

Karin
August 30th, 2005, 07:53 PM
I would be happy too but first we need a physical address. Even a relative where she can pick things up. If she has that, everybody can send care packages there safely. If not, the Red Cross will set up distribution sites to handle any individual incoming mail & packages.

I have Fed Ex & UPS scheduled from my office but remember...with this amount of damage all of this, including mail has been cancelled.

If Pags needs to rely on the Red Cross anything sent should be short & sweet so to speak, and paced. Alot gets lost this way, there are thousands of people in the same boat and it's hard to handle the load.

I am hoping we can come up with an address not to do with the resources. Anything sent has a better chance of reaching her.

Does she have a cell phone? Doggy Lover? I have loads of time on mine to keep calling....

A Coast Guard rescue pilot said there are still thousands to be rescued, animals have to be left behind. He has pets at home and this is killing him but this is also reality.

Four sealions are stranded in the middle of a street being washed out of the Marine attraction, people have been pouring water on them but one was in bad shape..it was shot to be put out of it's misery. I'm sure the others will be gone by tomorrow.

This is a painful fact of life, especially for me, but people will come first now.
The space a pet takes in a rescue aircraft can be filled by a person too, so little time and much more to do. Thousands are waiting.

Wow, Jefferson Parrish has just been ordered out and not to expect to return for at least a month. The water in New Orleans is expected to rise another 8 feet within hours, the city is going to be gone. Surrounding parrishes are evacuating too. All my friends that were safe were not afterall yesterday when I last heard and now they have to move again. Major highways are gone. The only way out is anyway you can find.

The aftermath is always the worse...I'm taking Ciara outside for a potty break and I'm going to take a long deep breath of fresh air.

Hi Gang, remember me :D
I wanted to come back and post because of Pags and wanted to share some information.

I'm very close with her and haven't been able to reach her by any means in over a day now. I will update you if and when I find anything out.

It's very lovely to see you all wishing to help in some way or some form. We feel completely helpless not knowing if she and her family are okay.

I have all of her contact information but haven't been able to reach her.

I think it's wonderful if we started a collection for her once we find out if everything is okay and what she may / may not need. In particular I'm certain financial aid would probably be most appropriate.

Thank you for these posts, it's helped me a little to know that others are just as concerned about her as I am. The last contact I had with her was 9am the morning the hurricane came through. Needless to say

They are a couple miles (or less) from the coastline but were right in the path of this monsterous beast!

Please say prayers, light some candles...even if you aren't normally a believer.

God Bless and take care, I WILL keep you updated when I hear of something/anything!

These are the last contacts I had from her and at that time it was very upbeat and all okay, sorry I thought it was 9am but it was just after 8am.

This is were Pags is..NOLA was hit slightly to the east but is 6 feet below msl. That is why the damage is so bad. Pags is on the gulf shores coast, a small area but a direct hit of hurricane force winds of 140 mph and greater, sea level too. A bouy at the mouth of the river yesterday morning registered a 47 ft. wave height just before being wiped out. That's 47 ft. above sea level. Gulf Shores has been leveled. Mobile bay is in the same condition but with less flooding. An oil rig platform in for repairs took out a bridge there.

The storm surge/high tides took in the most of it. Why do these monsters always hit at high tide??

I would guess any financial contributions would be much easier for her to deal with if it were already in US dollars. I`d also like to suggest that whoever is able to get in contact with Pags word the offer in such a way that if her family isn`t in need (or she doesn`t feel comfortable accepting help) that she should feel free to use whatever people can send to donate where she thinks best. I`m sure being on the spot she can find countless uses for donations if her family is being taken care of.

On a brighter note, I have some friends with family in the New Orleans area and they have all been able to contact their people (I think, though not for sure, by cell phone), although conditions there are horrible. I`m taking this as cautiously optimistic that at least some basic services will be up more quickly than the months they are predicting now.

One more idea, if you`re planning to send money, it might be easier or safer to send it Western Union. They can likely convert the currancy for you & I would bet there are more Western Union offices open than banks right now. Ask Pags when you reach her which would be more convienient for her.

You are all wonderful to pull together like this! :grouphug:

I just now got off the phone with pags mother in law in another state. She heard from them just after the storm and flooding went through. There is some damage to the home as far as water coming through but they are all OKAY!!!

Contact has been lost at that point, communications are down but they were all alive and well!!!!

Thank you so much to Sandy from the Today Show who helped me make this contact, you are a special lady!! God Bless you!!!

That is fantastic news! Thank God (whichever one you believe in ;) ). Let's hope Pags and family make it out of state to stay with some relatives, high, dry and comfortable, until order is restored. :highfive:

WOW! Thank You God!...and Luba! I just got off from work, from my cell phone I was able to reach a friend from the Margaritaville board I belong to, her name is Karen also. She was awaiting rescue as we spoke.

Friends from M'ville have a paypal account that other members can donate to. Thru this account which is managed by Laura, aka Jr. Mint, Karen's was able to hunker down in the Hyatt in NOLA. All of NOLA is being evacuated now. Once Karen gets out she is going to stay with friends in Baton Rouge for now. The account is growing fast...she will be able to start over somewhat with the funds raised. Maybe this could be an idea too for Pags? Just a thought.

As of this morning 100% of Pags state was without power. The entire state.

The mayor of NOLA now expects the death toll to reach in the thousands. All the refugees housed at the superdome are being moved to the Astrodome in Houston where thay can call home up to December if needed.

You can make donations to any Red Cross, specify "Hurricane Relief".

And if everyone still has some leftover prayers hanging around, please keep them coming....it's far from over. Actually, over the next few weeks it will be worse.

Some good news I just heard. The University Of Florida's Vet college is sending vet's and supplies along with other state colleges doing the same.
There is hope for the critters too.

It's a catastrophic jumbled mess that will take time to sort out. I have faith help will arrive from everywhere, even from the least expected sources.

Knowing Pags and her family are alright will allow me to sleep tonight. (And my friend Karen too of course.)

Luba thanks for the update, I think that it would be better when we can to send money in US$$$$.

It's frustrating not being able to do something right now. Please give it a little time. After Hurricane Andrew well meaning people sent semi trucks loaded with clothes that ended up rotting in the streets and hampered the clean-up. There is a system to the madness...just cannot happen overnight.
A direct address for Pags would still be helpful but if she cannot get it, what's the point? Waste is not what anyone needs right now. Within the next few days I'm sure we will have better bearings on her location.

The USS Comfort is on the way to the gulf shore. She is the largest floating hospital...

I have all of pags information regarding her address and phone number but it's not going to do us any good right now.

I will keep in contact with her mother in law from time to time and see if we can work something out, perhaps with paypal but I agree we just have to be patient during this time.

(hugs) everyone

Thanks Luba...waiting is the hardest part but everything cannot come together overnight. I am so worried about Pags & her family but there are thousands of others ...no one can break the red tape for just one.

Time is needed but time can be damning too...people lose sight.

In my opinion there should be a post of any kind regarding Pags every day so we do not forget..keep it rolling in any thread you can. Start a new thread, Luba, an update thread or continue this one...whatever, but keep this fresh...Luba you are the ears for Pags, I know what ever updates you get will be posted.

If you can post a location please do. I would also love to chat with her but I know the phone lines are down too.

Thanks so much again!

I agree with you, we should update this regularly every day!

I'm sure you understand I cannot post any of her contact information w/o her permission. However having said that I have no contact with her until phone service is restored.

I do have contact with her mother in law and in a couple of days I'll call her to just touch base and see if she's heard anything as of that time, any new information!

Saying prayers for everyone!!

I hope that Pags and her family are going to be alright.

Paying 20 or more cents a litre more for gas now is nothing compared to what Pags and everyone is going through in New Orleans. I will think of them when I stop at the pump tommorow to fill up. Besides the forest fires two summers ago which were actually several miles away from our home. I have never had to go through anything even remotely as horrific as Katrina. I can only imagine what they must be going through.

Yey! Pags is ok. Hopefully she'll stay that way. :fingerscr :) Watching the news is so horrible these days. It just gets worse and worse. At least they're starting to get the aid to some places. It just sucks that Dubya had to see the destruction first hand before he made anything happen. Oh, well- at least it's happening, right?

Prin, this is not true!Action was taken before Katrina even hit. I am offended that you would try to turn this thread into another bashing thread. You are way off base.

I agree Karin. There was a ton of warning that Katrina was coming. People were asked to leave and find refuge, and plans were in the works for relief from the get go. I beileve they knew all along that the levy was going to break too. It was simply a matter of time.

I might also mention that it is NOT unreasonable for the president to announce his plans after he does a public fly by of the damage. This would seem pretty normal to me. It's not like he was going to assess the damage, rather to get a first hand view of what he's been told has happened in his country.

I just hope that the rest of the world opens their pockets to the americans right now. We all saw generosity pour out when the Tsunami hit...while the casualties are fewer here, there are thousands and thousands of homeless people in need of help.

The blame-game is not going to help anyone, even President Bush does not have a magic wand to make everything better!
No,I am no fan of Mr Bush, but he's had to deal with more disasters than any other president 9/11 included.
The enormity of this human disaster, must be overwhelming for everyone trying to help, they did prepare best they could and people were asked to leave, unfortunately many who did not, died in their homes....luckily our Pags and family were not among them...it's just an unbelievable disaster.
I cannot help watching CNN every night, what's going to happen to all these desolate people??

Sometimes blame is the only way things are fixed.

This didn't have to be that bad. The funds were there to fix the weak points of the levy's. They put it off (federal govt) with a mere 1million left to go on the project they had billions available to fix the levy system, they didn't.

Everything that can be done is being done. There is nothing stopping any money, supplies, manpower, law enforcement, medical needs, food and water, shelter..etc, etc, except the aftermath of the destruction. "Fixing" this booboo is not an overnight bandaid. Our government should not be blamed what so ever, we did not cause this disaster. I say "we" because "we" are the government. We put the administration there by popular vote...our overall leader. Same goes for each state govenor and laws, funding and such. People vote on how much money should be spent on fixing levee's or roads. Read our Constitution. Read our Declaration Of Independence. Take note on the "We The People" part please.

Sometimes I do wish "we" would keep our noses out of other countries problems but that is not what this nation was built by....

We are doing our best and we voted this power in on all's behalf. Our President is acting on our behalf. He still has limits too .

That is exactly what they want you to think Karin.

There is plenty that is not being done that could be.

I completely blame the government. They had the foresight to prepare and to fix, they didn't. Even now they have the supplies and the resources, yet they're not using them?

Ask yourself why? It would be a lot different if this were New York, California or Washington! Better yet, even a different country. They would have aid drops done by air the very first at the latest the second day.

On the chance some miracle happens I am still trying the phone lines where Pags is!

Luba I somehow missed your BIG message that Pags and family made it through. Thank goodness I saw it finally. I'm so relieved and very grateful to you for keeping us informed. Good to have you back, if only for a while.

I don't want to get into government bashing at all, but I was wondering why we haven't seen army tent villages all over the place yet? Why no food and water supplies with tent villages??? I seemed there was a quicker response to the Tsunami disaster than the one in our own back yard

And what's with the snipers?? Fire back boys - that's all I can say on that one. Wow! We truly see humanity at it's best and worst don't we.

To blame our government is to blame each and every one of us personally. We vote on these issues..where money is spent and how. That is how our tax dollars work. This will be my last post on this issue too.

Where would you drop such aid the 1st or second day? Who is there to make sure looters just don't cart the entire stash away?
Give me a break folks.Blame, blame and flame. Get real, plan it out yourself. What would you do?
To answer the next post also, tents do not float well and it's hard to pitch one when you are under fire. Would you want your tent parked on open sewage? Maybe a pile of dead bodies would suit you better, the morgue cannot keep up.

Tent's and rv's are on the way right now. Over 100 miles of coastline must be secured & safe before this can happen, once it starts it does happen quick.

Does anyone here have a real concept of what is going on or am I wasting my breath? I give up. You may go back to your cushion life, sit on your couch and judge away.

If this should happen to you, and it can...believe me, we've got you covered to the best of our ability, just like we are doing now.

Wanted to let you know that I'm calling pags mother in law tomorrow. Will update you if anything new.

Karin, bless your heart for thinking the good of the government. I know you mean well with your thoughts but I'm just not in agreement.

If one has the ability to do more and one does not, it is by choice.

This is reflective of the goverment. The poor people suffer, die and lose everything because of them. It disgusts me! It's a revolting discriminatory action to not help these folks who are mostly very poor and black.

Shame on the US government, may you be paid back by your maker!!

I think this is quite an offensive and patronizing thing to say. Just because you disagree with Karin, AND myself for that matter, does not mean that she or I am naive. It also does not mean that your argument is the true, more factual one.

I think that there is a general inability for Canadians to fully, completely comprehend the impact and the rescue procedure for hurricanes as we do not have them here. I'm sorry, but I would venture to guess that Karin, someone who has lived through hurricanes and who is an American living in the thick of it, would have a better understanding of what's going on there.

Yes, refuge is taking time, but this is a major catastrophy and with that comes time delays, hurdles that set back the trucks and of course, logistical headaches.

As far as Im concerned this entire thing could have been avoided if people would simply allow the oceans to have their normal, natural coastlines. People think that they are stronger than the ocean. They build levys, breakwaters and retaining walls. Mother nature is much stronger...she will always, one day, come back to reclaim her space....as she has done now.

Anyways, my point is that just because you disagree does not mean that someone else is naive. It means you do not share the same perspective. It would be quite as easy for her to call anyone with the oppositve view naive, but she's not...and that's respectable.

I'm not here to bicker with you. I came to post relevant information about pags and her family. Things got side tracked, sorry if anyone takes offence.

Back to the topic at hand before it turns into an argument.

Again, I'll let you know more once and if I get through to pags family and after my call to her mother in law tomorrow.

God Bless
