How can I stop my dog from eating our socks?

Our Golden Retriever has a habit of seeking out our socks and chewing them up. I scold her whenever I catch her doing it, but she just can't seem to break the habit. They are irresisitible to her! She'll even go and get the same sock I took away from her 5 seconds before. I think it's an addiction!

We tried getting laundry hampers that were taller so she wouldn't be able to get into them, but she just pulls them over, steals some socks and makes a run for it. Sometimes she brings them to us to show us what she's got, and other times she hides with them and chews them to pieces. I'm getting tired of scolding her with no results. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my beagle. The only way to prevent it is to keep the bedroom and laundry room doors closed. Same goes for the bathroom door - he loves to eat kleenex and toilet paper too!

Unfortunately we don't have a laundry room door. Our laundry is in our unfinished basement, where we spend a lot of time with her. Sigh. ;)

Hi There,

I would try to get her a toy that she might like which is similar to a sock...maybe a rope. Play with her with the rope...and maybe that will refocus her.

But definitely change places for the laundry hamper...maybe put it in a bathroom or any room and keep the door locked.

We use baby gates where we have no door. I don't know if that would be practical for a large dog since she may be able to jump over it, but maybe it could work for you if you placed the gate high enough, but not so high that she could squeeze underneath it.
