I'll decide when I get to know my puppy better but was just looking for some input. I should add that his name is Freeway now. Thanks!

What kind of dog? If you don't know him yet, how will you know his name fits? :D

He's a Corgi/GSD/??? mix. We've visited him twice already but I want to narrow the choices down before he comes home and then pick one that suits him at that time. :)

Does he have huge paws for his body?

Not really. I was surprised that they were so small...they might grow tho. Do you have a good name for a boy with big paws?

He is smallish, is brown and black with a kind of stubby tail (thought it was cropped at first). He also has floppy ears and is a big kisser.

LOL I was just getting an idea of how big he will be-- it changes "Thor" from being a threatening name to an ironic name... LOL

Frankly, I'm still waiting for somebody to name their dog Johnny. :)

Nice names. I do really like Thor. My puppy will prolly be medium size though.

I like human names- like Jimmy, Frankie, Kenny or Peter (I had a fish named Peter once), so I'm not too good at picking out "dog" names... :D

But of your list, I say Huxley.

Human names are really popular...I think I read 50 percent of dog names are human names. Ahhh...Peter is a cute name for a fish.

Thanks for voting! I just started looking at names. I also like the idea of foreign names with meaning. Something Native American might be nice. Freeway is an okay name but it does make me nervous whenever I say it :)

When I think about it, there is nothing good between "Freeway" and dogs... Dogs on the freeway  , dogs getting their free way  , getting dogs the free way  ...

I know a red and white husky named Shaman. I think that's a great name for a husky or independent doggy... Personally, I like Boo for the laid back type. :) There is a Kuvasz that comes to our park whose name is Tokai- I don't know what it means but it's fun to say... I'm telling you, I'm crappy at this. Jemma was named before we got her, as were all the other dogs I have ever had, except Boo- and he chose his own name. :D

LMAO! Oh my gosh...my tummy hurts from laughing. I agree...never thought of the other meanings. That is so funny.

I like Boo as well! Tokai is also really cute - it means big city in Japanese. Love Jemma! Girl dogs are easier to name I think.

I especially like Shaman! That is now on my possibility list. Thanks!

Freeway was the cute little doggie in Hart to Hart! I like it...

I also like Huxley though...

I have another name for a big dog for you, I was partial for my Neo Mastiff's name either Zues which we did pick but the runner up was Thor. I don't know if you like that name but it's very fitting for a bigger dog I think.

I think that it's tough to pick a dogs name before you actually get to know the dog. With our first newf, my hubby had her name all picked out before we ever got her (Lacey) and luckily it fit her fine. My son also had his newf's name picked out before he got him (Parker).

For myself, I prefer to let the dog 'tell' me what their name should be. We named our current newf Hazel because of her eyes. I had a GSD as a child that was named Bunny because she hopped everywhere instead of running or walking. My corgi x was named Boon because it means an unexpected gift (she was thrown over our fence as a really young pup at Christmas time). I had a St. Bernard named Bummer because he wanted to beg all the time. Most of the pets I've had were named for something they did, or some personality quirk.

Good Luck! Names are always so hard to choose! :p

I like Freeway, it's original and you're not likely to run into anybody else with the same name. Of course I do agree with Prin's list of why not's, but still like it. I wanted to name Halo "Bounty" because she was the quicker picker upper - everything was in her mouth the second she saw it.

Thanks for the input. I don't think he knows his name Freeway yet and I'm not ruling it out yet. I've never seen Hart to Hart. :) Looks like a cute dog though.

Great suggestions everyone. I will decide when I spend more time with him. Can't believe someone threw a puppy over your fence Kandy! Nice Christmas present though! My boy is also a Corgi x.

We still haven't decided on a name yet and are getting desperate! Today is the deadline as I have to register him with the vet (tatoo), get a tag, etc.

Actually most of the names in the poll my husband and I have decided against. Rascal is something that fits him now but then there is the problem of him living up to his name. Which is also why I am against Freeway.
I love Huxley but I don't think it suits him.

Just wanted to get some feedback on a few new names that we are thinking of...

Astro?

Louie?

We need a name that is simple and unpretentious to suit him. My husband loves space type names (rocket, astro). Our puppy is pretty quiet/shy and loves sleeping & peanut butter. He seems to have many vivid dreams and is a very smart boy too...he already knows sit, come, fetch and kisses in only 4 days!

Thanks sooo much for the comments & suggestions already! Anymore thoughts?

Since your husband loves space movies, and you want a relaxed name, why not combine? Robby (the robot from the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet)

You both get what you're looking for. :thumbs up

What I do is think of a word that describes the dog and change it around..

He looks like a "Spike" to me...xD

When I got Tucker, I wanted to call him Frodo or Baggins, I loved Lord of the Rings. My family wouldn't let me, Tucker was the only other name we could agree on. My hubby and son wanted Dozer or Buckeye, crazy fools.

:sorry: Didn't know I posted in the wrong place!

Thanks for all your responses!

Still haven't decided yet on a name but we are leaning towards Louie (named after the great jazz legend) as it seems to fit and who doesn't love Louie! Thanks Tootz he is pretty laid back (exception - tonight maybe too much sugar!) so it is fitting.

Personally, I like AJAX

What about ATOM? Sounds human (Adam), has that spacey-sciencey thing going on....

Freeway is the best name for him, my GSD/Corgi boy died a week before you posted your question, his name was Freeway also, its a strong name, and I think it means goes on forever.

puppy4ever- I looked around but couldn't find it anywhere; what name did you finally decide on?

Louie is a great name. My Labs are named Bosco (white/yellow) and Chester (black). It took us awhile to name Bosco. We rescued Chester when he was a year old, so he was already named. Good thing we like his name. Both the names really suit each other. I think that is the key, they have to suit the name you give them. Growing up I had a Miniature Schnauzer named Harold.
It can be tough to name a pet, just list off a bunch of names and see what works best.
