How old is a puppy when she goes into heat? and how do you know she is?

Usually go into heat between 6 - 8 months the first time. You may not even realize she is in heat. Some signs would be if she licks more often.. will see a tiny drip of blood when they get up after laying down for a bit... area may be a bit swollen... nipples can be a bit swollen...

Get her spayed and you won't have to worry about it. :)

The age for 1st heat cycle can range usually from 8 months to just over 1 yr. Sometimes they can go into it earlier. This is why it is suggested to get them fixed at 6 months. Usually in the beginning they spot a little and their vulva swells. They are most succeptable between aprox the 10-12 day.

thanks guys, I just adopted her Friday and already have her appointment scheduled, I was just hoping she wouldnt have to go thru "heat" before this happens, thank again. She's booked for Early September, I have to take her for her shots first.

I have a question: does the age that a dog goes into heat depend on the size or breed of the dog? I got Lindy when she was about 6-9 months. They spayed her at the Humane Society just before I picked her up. But I was wondering.

I don't think it matters much to the size each vary, although I think that larger breeds are more often early.

Dogs generally have their first heat at 6 - 12 months of age. Although, some larger breeds have their first heat when they are 12 - 24 months old. Dogs generally come into heat every 6 months. I find that the smaller breeds usually have their first heat cycle at approximately 6 - 8 months. Since it isn't really possible to guess when a female dog will have her first heat, it is generally recommended to have her spayed before she is 6 months. I know some vets recommend waiting a little longer for the larger breeds.

Because the age varies so much it is best to assume that all will have their first at around 6 months.
