although i have lsots of typos, im not doing it cause i think its cool or such, i am just way too lazy to generally type properly, and generally most ppl get the jist of what i say, typing is so boring as is grammar, and anyone with half a brain can figure what i say so that suits me fine. i am truly lazy :D (check that, not one typo, lol lol lol)

Dear God, I may go blind trying to read that! If I see a message like that I have to skip over it, I'm too old to try and read stuff like that. :D

Some short forms are just quicker to read and glance at, others just have improper grammar. IMHO lol lmho!!! HAHAHAHAHA

I would be skipping over that one, not even going to try to read them. Don't need anymore headaches. :D

I think it's something along the lines of trying to be cool. For instance, last semester one guy in a class posted stuff on the class discussion board typing like that. He basically got told that a lot of people don't read his crap because people don't want to bother. So he wrote a very articulate post about how he was more than capable of writing properly and that it was his choice if he wanted to use internet slang and "1337" speak. For the unfamiliar 1337 refers to the term "leet", short for "elite". The idea is that while playing some games, it is necessary to communicate with the rest of your team via typed messages. However, to take the time to type proper english would take too long. So people use digits to replace some letters typed on the keypad on the right side of the keyboard. Bearsmom, I just want you to know that I'm 24 and I hate reading that as well. So it's really just people being idiots (unless they were actually of the variety that does so to save time typing out messages while playing very fast paced games).

Try being a high school English teacher...chat-speak (what I call it) creeps into formal writing all the time. A lot of kids don't even realize they're doing it!
