Love at first sight

I finally found a puppy (thanks for the suggestion) that I already love so much but he won't be coming home for a while. I find myself worrying about him already. He is very sweet, laidback and full of kisses!

My husband and I went shopping today and I was a little overwhelmed with all of the pet supplies out there. We settled on a simple small dog collar (there was none for puppies) and a medium size leash. We bought puppy shampoo, a towel, bowls and treats (no staple food since we will buy from shelter).

So many toys to choose from! We bought some tennis balls, a squeaky toy and a chew toy rope.

We will buy a crate and a brush soon....are we missing anything?

One thing that my husband picked out was Petrodex dental chews for small dogs. They are sticks made of beefhide and other things for tartar control. Is this safe for a 10 week old puppy do you think?

I was going to buy the bitter apple spray for electrical cords but heard that hot sauce worked better. Has anyone tried that? Is that too powerful?

Any great puppy proofing tidbits?

Thanks everyone!

Congrats! What kind of puppy is he?:)

Food at shelters is often not very good quality. I would get that at a pet supply store. IF you want to help the shelter, you can get an extra bag and donate it to them!

Here's one of my favorite sites about all things puppy. Hope it helps!

Thanks! :) I'm really excited about my boy.

I'm the proud mom of Freeway (might change his name though, is that bad?)...well I guess I will really be his mom when I go get him. His picture isn't there yet. I'm looking forward to posting his pic and see what you all think he is. He has corgi and GSD (just learned that here) in him but they don't know what else...I was surprised that he had floppy ears as I was expecting prick type ear with that mix.

He is really sweet...I noticed he was a little shy though. He kinda went off on his own a few times. When i picked him up he was all about me though!

I found that hot sauce is so much better than bitter apple and at least with my poodle she doesn't get near enough to it to taste it - she smells it and goes in the opposite direction - its so much cheaper than bitter apple too. :pawprint:

Dont forget to get a kong! They have ones especially for puppies! I dont know how I lived without one for 2 months!!

Other then that I must see a picture. I got my Shadow from the Cochrane Humane in April.

Congrats,have fun, and enjoy!

I have found that the Bitter Apple is good for a quick deterrent but not for a long lasting one as it tends to evaporate quickly on many surfaces.

Sounds like you have everything covered (you will likely find that you bought more stuff than you actually need, but that is what cupboards are for!). We have a medium sized collection of stuff we have bought before picking up each of our three, only to either never use it or only use it once (like the detangler spray we got for our Yourkie / Silky X -- still a full bottle).

Best of luck with him. Be sure to post some pics when you get the chance. :pawprint:

Congrats!! I love the name Freeway - it is a nice reminder of what you saved him from!!!! But of course you wouldn't be a horrible Mom if you changed his name!!! Can't wait to see pics!! When can he come home???

Lol Catt! Whenever I say his name now that will come to mind. :)

Thanks everyone! Didn't notice the rest of the replies until now...I am going to take a picture when I visit Freeway next and will post it here. He will get his surgery and then I can pick him up on Thursday the 25th. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas day...already seems like an eternity! I also can't believe just how attached I am seeing him only twice so far...I can tell this was meant to be!

I saw a kong at the store and was wondering if it would be a good a purchase! I will get one before i bring him home - thanks!! Great news also about that tried and true hot sauce!

Has anyone seen this costume before? Would it stay put? I saw it on ebay..my husband and I couldn't stop laughing when we saw this (I HAVE to buy this for halloween!). Obviously not first priority but it's so cute! Those ears might not be so comfy though...
