We've always taught our dogs to come by calling their name, ie: "Hazel, Come!" - when they come to you, praise them mightily and give cookie (if you are going with food rewards). You should also teach that 'sit' is part of the 'come' command. When they come to you they should automatically sit in front of you. If you want to do that, then when they come to your call, have them sit before giving the cookie. Always praise the specific act, "Good come, Good sit" etc.

How old is the puppy?

Start by having the pup on the leash (to empower your words), use a happy, inviting tone to say "come". Lean over slightly at the waist (bending over is invitational) and with one hand on the leash use the other for the hand signal. As long as his eyes are on you - be happy, the micro-second his eyes leave you - say 'no' in a firm sharp tone, when his eyes come back to you get happy again. You are pressuring the bad choice and rewarding the good one. Keep directing him towards you until he reaches you, and then stand tall and as your signal hand goes up - his eyes will follow and his butt will go down. Ta-da!
It might be that you have to keep redirecting him 5 times until he ends up where you want him, but just keep pressuring the wrong choices until you get the final outcome you want and then praise!
'Come' is always happy - other wise you are crashing your own party and no one wants to come into an angry tone.

Great advice tenderfoot! I've learned so much from all of your posts!

Thanks you Nymph - I have been absent so much lately that I feel guilty (my modem is down), but it is always so nice to know that I am welcome when I do show up. :D

Yup, same method. :D Except that we were told not to use the word "come" at first, because the pup will initially stray from you, and you want the word "come" to mean "get over here NOW!". So, we started out with "here" instead. Same difference, though. ;)

MinPins aren't known for thier recall so as Tenderfoot said, keep it happy and fun. Thankfully MinPins are usually treat motivated and this is one command I will use a special treat for. I also use a different word and we have a few in our house, we use 'come' much to easily in daily life so pick something totally different, my friend uses "cracker" for her word (she had four MinPins).

DO NOT ask your dog to come off leash, unless it's a mastered command, also be sure to practise in the house, in the yard, in the park everywhere really!
