TORONTO -- Animal rescue workers say there's a cat crisis in Toronto.

The Toronto Humane Society says it's overwhelmed by abandoned felines and wants members of the public to give them a good home.

The shelter now has more than 500 homeless cats after an elderly couple on Wednesday surrendered 37 pets that they can no longer care for.

"It's the most desperate crisis ever," said society president Tim Trow.

"As full as we are, we couldn't turn them away."

To encourage people to adopt, the society is dropping the $25 adoption fee from Friday until Monday.

Sadly, the cat crisis is rampant in Toronto. My vet is trying to place kittens and cats as well. Her clinic has posted its own notice - in addition to the public bulletin board made available for postings. When I glanced at it today I would say 95% of the postings were individuals, rescues etc. trying to place cats.

There's a cat crisis everywhere, which is why it's so frustrating and discouraging to continue seeing posts here about cats being irresponsibly bred.:(

Until these people stop what they're doing, there's no end in sight.

I understand they're also having a small animal overpopulation problem, too :(
