urinating dog

we have a young mixed lab that seems to have lost bladder control. on occasion she seems to urinate on herself. is there any thing we can do to control this.

What is happening when she does this? Is someone standing over her and petting her or approaching her?

Does she do this only at certain times, like when you come home?

Hi this is Dalia from the Wizard of Paws. I run a private dog training business, and I am a Certified Professional Trainer. What I can suggest is that the reason why your puppy urinates unexpectedly is becuase they are known as a submissive peeier. This means that if you reach down to pet your puppy, they are usually overly shy and nervous, and excited, and then dribbles a bit. What you can do when that happens is before petting your puppy say no pee, and then dont pet him/her if u see the slightest trickle coming out of them. If they do dribble then treat it like housebreaking, and dont act happy, and put them in isolation for 10 min. (dog house) every dog hates that place. It is like saying to a child go to your room. Dog house is a place where the dog isnt there that often i.e washroom, so it is a negative area, not a positive area. dont use there crate for bad misbehaviour because it should be there home a place they can go to relax and be alone. Unless the dog doesnt use the crate at all, and then you can use it.. If your puppy does not dribble when you reach down to pet it then say Good No Pee and pat them, and verbally praise. use a soft tone and and pet very gently, under the chin and chest area. With submissive peeiers they get to overly excited but if you pat them softly, and use a smooth long tone then they relax. Try it let me know how it goes. Well, if it's submissive/excitement peeing, there's ways to deal with that. Putting her in a time out or treating it like housebreaking isn't going to acheive much, though, since it's not a training or behavioural issue. The LAST thing you want to do with a submissive dog is punish them for submissive behaviour, that's terrible advice. And a dog should NEVER be put in a crate for punishment - time outs mean nothing to a dog anyway.

Is she spayed? FIRST thing to rule out is a medical problem - often young spayed dogs get spay incontinence; a short course of hormones will fix that. Also it could be a simple UTI - again, easy to diagnose and treat. Take her and a urine sample (or the vet can get one from her) to the vet.

If the vet rules out a medical issue, post back & I can tell you how to effectively deal with submission issues. :)
