Mutt or Purebred?

Kariia

:thumbs up What do you like more, Mutts or Purebreds?

I say Mutts. They are usually less hyper than purebreds.. and rescuing a poor dog is better than buying a purebred puppy.

LOL You can't really compare. It's a dog vs dog issue. I like some mutts, but some are ghastly looking. Same with pure doggies.

True. Chinese Cresteds are UGLY...

But some mutts can be ugly too. Go figure.

I will probably always have mutts, if only because I can't stand the thought of all those homeless dogs sitting in cages. :( I think pure-bred dogs have their purpose, though. At the very least, you know what you're getting with a pure-bred ... no one is posting here asking "which breed is my dog?" or "how big do you think she'll get?" when they have a pure-bred. ;) Personally, I like the element of surprise that comes with a mutt (like how my 70lb husky/shep pup has grown into a 40lb border collie/shep :p ). :D

Oh, those Chinese Cresteds are something else to look at, aren't they? I'd like to think that all breeds have a purpose, even if it is to warm a lap, but this breed.....

I picked mutt for the simple fact that I can not bring my self to buy a dog (pure) when there are so many good dogs that need homes! I will always have a mutt :D

But then, there's this. This dog makes you want a Chinese Crested... :yuck:

It was something...HORRIBLE.

Anyway, I adopted my Pomeranian a few days ago. There are a lot of purebreds in shelters..

Between a rescued purebred and a rescued mutt (you never know, some people pay a lot of money for a mutt!), I say mutt for the same reason as Writing4Fun. If you have a purebred, you have a better idea of what you're getting into based on other experiences with the breed, but with mutts you have no idea what to expect and it's like Christmas every day as you find out a bit more about your dog! I know, cheesy, but it's true. I love the surprises that come with a mutt :p.

I bought my mutt before I knew better, but my purebred is a rescue.

I know. There are some weird mixes like a Daschund and a Sheltie... but they are all cute.

(except for Chinese Cresteds...)

Impossible for me to answer. I have had both - actually I was expecting a mixed hound when I fell in love with our first mini Dachshund - so it was more about that particular dog than whether he was a pure bred or mixed. My Eskimo is a pure breed. But I must say that the most even tempered dog I ever had was a hound cross. Good old Heinz 57 - many people in their 50s feel this way.

I know a Hound/Husky mix that is the sweetest dog ever.

Mutts are usually more even tempered than purebreds. And they are more...unique.

We will be getting a purebred English Cocker Spaniel either from the ecs rescue or from a breeder, the closest rescue dogs are in California, we were interested in one but apparently he was not good with kids. The rest seem to be in Eastern United States which poses a problem with shipping. Unless something comes up in the next few months we will probably end up buying from a breeder as they are closer and actually seem more available then the rescues.

He's fine. He's a Crested/Xoloito-whatever mix. The only problems he has are cataracts...

But still... :yuck:

I didn't vote because I really don't favor one over the other. Before my newfs, all my dogs (in my adult life) were mixed breeds - two from the pound, one from a stray's litter and one that adopted me. My husband had wanted a big, big dog for such a long time, and every dog we got that they said - oh, this is gonna be a big dog - turned out to be sheltie sized or smaller. We attended a couple of big adoption events in Utah, but couldn't find anything that we felt was what we wanted. It took a long time to decide on a newf and I did check all sorts of rescues but in the end we decided to get one as a puppy. We wanted specific traits, and the newfs fill the bill for us. We were so heartbroken when Lacey died and we felt like we hadn't been given enough time with her, so we got another puppy. If we ever decide to get Hazel a housemate, it would be from the local shelter.

I couldn't vote. Don't care if purebred or mutt, just prefer fluffy and small enough to hold. Then again, I love the shiney, smooth, soft coats . . . or beautiful tails! Yeah . . great tails like Akitas or corkscrews or or or maybe cute ears! one up, the other down or Papillion ears, but I love long and silky! Expression! Can't resist the bright, shiny, intelligent eyes that just seem to twinkle with personality!

They showed a picture of the dog that won the ugliest dog contest on television the other night. He was pretty compared to that picture that I just saw on this thread. He truly is one scary looking dog.

My preference is goldens and specifically rescued goldens.

Mine are mutts, and they are very loveable :)

I want to adopt or rescue two brother yorkies one day, will not pay for any full bred pup, and may regret wanting yorkies, lol, but they do call to me.

Maybe after my guys go to the bridge, I will just check out the shelter again, lol.

Mutts are cool

I saw the ugliest dog! Bendito! lol. I actually voted pure bred because I have one, but I wish there was a "I don't care, I love them all!" because I would have chosen that. I guess I voted wrongfully... sorry guys!

I am totally for rescuing mutts and purebreds! I don't care about papers... just some good snuggling!

The ugliest dog I have ever seen was a yellow lab mixed with gsd. It was all blonde, except for a few hairs on her back that made her look really dirty, and the biggest, blackest eyebrows- like the actor on the OC- what's his name? The guy with the HUGE eyebrows? Picture that on a dirty yellow lab...
Researchbulls-- those pics are hilarious.
Here are my two favorite mutts.

I picked purebred only because I have one right now and they were trailing behind. My last dog was a mutt and I loved him to bits, I love ALL dogs (maybe except that one that Kariia had the pic of thats ugly). I think a dog is a dog and love them all the same.

I have always liked mutts. Dogs are dogs to me. I own a purebred becuase after arguing with my boyfriend we decided on a small dog. I tried for six months to rescue a small dog, if we found one it was usually gone by the time we called or went to the shelter. I told him my next dog is a rescue no matter what, purebred or not.

I prefer mutts. I like that my dog is a one of a kind. Purebreds you pretty much know what you're going to get look and personality wise and it just feels too much like eugenics to me. Oh yeah, and whoever said mutts aren't as hyper hasn't met my Kayla Monster! :D

as for the mutts vs. purebreds... I say whichever needs you. They give love equally.

I don't care whether a dog is a mutt or a purebred. I have had both and don't see a real difference other than the way they look. I refuse to shell out the $$$ to buy a "purebred" when there are so many other dogs needing homes. A dog is a dog, no matter how much it costs.

Sophie is not a mutt but I don't think she would be considered a purebred either since she didn't come from a "breeder", her parents were not registered and she is not registered, but I have seen both her parents and they are small beagles.

After being 2 for 2 on rescues with fear problems, one aggression the other one who knows. I am NOT willing to risk it again with my daughter. I will only adopt from COE breeders, and rotties. Only from the breeder I found harley from.....I tried, I did my part in rescue, I can not chance not knowing history. But I will always love my Mutts. RIP bear Rottie lab mix, and angel Rottie lab mix

I see a lot of ppl posting that they perfer mutts, where are the 9 that voted for purebreds?

I myself, prefer purebred. I like to know what I am getting. I am inexperienced with dogs, and for that reason, like to know what I am getting. I like having contact qwith the breeder for questions... esxpecially ones i'd feel stupid asking my vet.
I would adopt a Toller mutt (grr for ppl mixing them) but that'd be about it.
My tollers have won my heart, forever and always :)

With a mixed breed especially if you are not sure of what the mix is then how do you know you are able to deal with his issues or behaviors, how big he will get etc....
Because we have given away a dog in the past the was unsuitable for us, and we were not experienced enough to train him properly. We don't want to make the same mistake again and now we are being very cautious we have considered some dogs at the spca but once we do research on them and the workers tell us what they think he is, there is usually some characteristic in the breed that we are not able to deal with. We are now going with a purebred (we have researched the breed throughly) probably from a breeder unless we can find a rescue that is suitable for us.

I had an easier time training my mutt than my purebred, mind you completly different types of dogs. With mutts just take all of their charateristics throw them in a bag and see what you get. But all dogs no matter what have thier own quirks.

ILoveMutts!

Purebreds come in about 400 breeds (if I'm not mistaken), so you have 400 variations of the animal that dog is, to choose from.

With mutts you have an infinite amount of variations! From dogs that are almost indistiguishable from a purebred, to very unique and interesting combinations. So I'd say I prefer mutts. And the most beautiful dogs I've seen were indeed mutts.
