Soon, I will be travelling for three weeks and leaving my buddy (14 months old) with a good friend of mine but, I am affraid of how he will behave in my absence. This is the first time we will be separated from each other for such a long time. I wish I could take him with me. I wonder what to expect. Anyone with good or bad experiences with this issue? much appreciated.

Please be clear about any vet care. If there is an emergency and they don't have the money, what will you do? How far will you expect them to take treatments, etc.
As for him behaving badly, as long as you know for sure they won't hit him, I'd leave the rest up to them (if you trust them).

Great info Prin!!
Leave your dog with something of yours ...wear a shirt or something for a couple nights and leave it with your dog in his bedding area or where he will be sleeping.
BEFORE you go for the long time away can you take ONE day away from your dog and leave the dog with this person for that one day and night??
This way the dog KNOWS you are coming back, even if you can do this two times before you go that will be good!!
Make list of your routine re food times, play times and walks etc...keep it as normal as possible when the dog is on vacation with your friend

allow your pup to take its own bed and toys with him, and as luba said put in something of yours...
i also find if you leave really really detailed instructions and advice how to handle pup it wil help your friend no end, also be very clear about feeding and snacks as you dont wnat underfeeding or over to occur...
and to help you i find the best thing to do is ring your carer once every day jsut to say hi and check on pup, make sure you tell them also to report all probs and not be afraid to discuss stuff (they may be afraid of offending you)..
i call my girl once a day if i leave her anywhere and i find it reassuring...
have a good trip :D and dotn worry too much, its hard but you will get through it.

This is a very good point, something that many people overlook when they go on vacation. My vet has my credit card info on file, this way if anything were to happen, anybody looking after my pets don't have to worry about the vet bill. I travel with my cellphone so I'm reachable. I also check in every couple of days to make sure everything is okay. If you are able to, leave a phone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency.
