Hey everyone... we are desperately looking for a store that carries harnesses.... here in Kitchener Ontario Canada our pet stores do not have much of a selection.... Does anyone know of a pet store in T.O. that has a wider selection?? Our dog Thai has gone through 3 harnesses in 1 year, and always seems to wiggle out of the ones here in town... I do not think they are fitting properly... Pls help with your suggestions. Thanks
Jenn

Take your dog with you to the store and fit the harness there :D

I got one for Kaos at our local Pet Valu. It's the kind that they step into, mind you it's one heck of a wrestling match with a puppy who knows when the harness goes on he's going for a walk. Pet Valu carries a wide variety of them, we went to the one at Highway 10 (Hurontario Street) and Steeles. You can bring your dog in and get him fitted for one right in the store. Kaos hasn't been able to get out of this one.

I got my doggies sled dog harnesses from Chatmac... Their website hasn't worked in a while... They're so much better than the pet store harnesses, they're made by hand and they're usually cheaper than the pet store ones too. I don't know how you can contact them...

This page has pictures of dogs wearing them. The third pictures down from the top (left and right) show them the best. The front is padded and it's tight around their chest and shoulders so the doggy won't get out. Go to the "Comedy page".

Aha!! I found the contact info:

telephone: 519-291-4738

Seriously, Jemma and Boo's were around $20 each. They're terrific. :) (and they have a variety of colors and sizes.

how can your dog wriggle out of them if they are around his legs. They should be tight enough to only fit 2 fingers under them (that's what our trainer said). That way there is no way to get out of them.

Odin went threw 4 harnesses in the first month we got him. First one he bit the plastic buckle and broke it, then he grew out of the next one, then he bit the buckle of the third again, and now the 4th one we are on. So far no bitten/broken buckles and doesn't look like he will grow anymore.

Ok... well first of all... Thai has a squishy face... alot of skin and fur around his face.. and is a bit of a contorsonist.... So we have a hard time with harnesses.... We spent all day today going from store to store in Burlington, Hamilton, Ancaster, and Cambridge with no success.... Its difficult because he seems to wiggle out of all of them... We have been fitted.... and they dont seem to do the trick.... Right now we have on made by Bull brand... and its ok..not great.. but ok.. he has wiggled out of it before.. and that frightens me.. See Thai is a bit stubborn... so out on walks... when he doesnt want to come in...he wiggles and carries on till he gets off the harness.. and than he is loose... and thinks we are playing... I usually come into the apartment building.. close the door (he cant see me).. and than he comes crying at the door to get in.. but I dont like him being off leash... SOOO... i need a good harness...one that is wiggle off proof... I am getting very annoyed at the selections we have seen... I need a store that carries a LARGE selection of harnesses... not just one or two different kinds... Any suggestions??? What store names and locations?? We are williong to travel, but unfortunately, we do not have a credit card to order online.. Pls help. Thanks

Try looking at site www.caninefriendly.com - it is one of Canine Equipment's websites. This one will show you a vest harness with a light lining that helps prevent chafing. Comes only in 4 colours - black, orange, royal blue and red. My Eskimo has the black and orange - he is a real puller. Has never manage to escape this harness, has not chewed it (only thing he hasn't been able to get to while on his person) and it doubles as a seat belt. Many people with short haired dogs who are experiencing chafing ask me where I got it. I do buy all of my dog's products at one Toronto store - the owner is very experienced at fitting. I don't know whether we are supposed to mention a particular store/groomer on this site, but if you want to know where I shop, please PM me.

I have an english bulldog who has no neck, and a very squishy face, and he has never been able to get out of his harness. I'm trying to picture it though. Maybe you are buying one too big? The harness should not slide forward when you pull on the leash, letting him get his head under it.

The only other thing I could suggest is a Lupi...which is a harness that tightens if he pulls. I have only seen them on small dogs though, so not sure if you could get one for a larger dog.

Also there are "Budy Belts" leather harnesses. Very expensive (about $100) but it's basically 2 leg holes your dogs front legs go threw, then it has a buckle at the top. Our friend's english bully has one.

Take a trip out to St.Jacobs, Creature Comfort. They carry a lot of harnesses and if they don't have what you need, they can get it.
