Figured out why Boo's not lifting his leg at the new house...

Starting about 2 days after we got here, Boo has been peeing like a girl and I felt so bad for him because he just seemed to lack confidence in our front and back yards. I've only heard of a dog not peeing in his own yard if another dog is intimidating him, usually one living with him. We finally figured out what is happening.

At night, a twit nearby lets his intact german shep out to pee on everybody's lawns. So he comes in through the bushes and pees all over on top of Boo's pee. So everyday, there is testosterone-filled pee that is higher up on the bushes than Boo's. So after maybe two days, I guess he gave up competing and started to pee low down. After seeing this guy, though, Boo is back to his full glory. :) I'm so glad we were awake when the guy came to pee this time. :)

hehe my sam always pees like a girl,

Im glad boo has his confidence back.

I hate when people allow their dogs to mark everything in site including other peoples lawns, its just not cool

If the dog was castrated, I wouldn't have a problem with it because Boo wouldn't have a problem... ;) Not like with my two big guys I can ever have a fabulous lawn, but please, leave your hormones elsewhere... :)

My Diego pees like a girl, he squats down instead of lifting his leg, is that a problem?

No, no, it's only a problem if he used to lift his leg and doesn't any more. The more dominant the doggy, the higher up the leg goes. Boo isn't dominant, but he still lifts his leg a bit. In this case, he stopped lifting his leg because he was intimidated and submissive to the other dog. That's the problem- the REASON for the change in habits.

I agree... as long he has his confidence back. Maximus doesn't lift his leg EVER when he pees. I had him neutered at 6 months thought, and he's only (almost) 10 months now. I'm not worried about it- is possible he may never lift his leg, right?

Totally possible. My friend's standard poodle has never lifted his leg and he just passed his 13th birthday...

The only problems with doggies and peeing are sudden changes in behavior. :)

My brother's dog must be very dominant. He lifts his leg so that he looks like a ballerina when he pees....lol

Yup. It's a good sing of dominance. The higher the pee, the "bigger" the dog (or the impression he wants to leave of how big he is)...

Valentin uses both methods. No leg on his "home turf" and leg lift on walks. Remember, he is a mini doxie. I am surprised he has not put his hip out !!! He stands on tip toe with his leg extended almost perpendicular to his body. He IS an alpha, I think he would use a step stool if he could lol
