i own a four year old male akita, we know a female who is interested in breeding, however she has had two seizures in her lifetime, she is also four years old. i am doing all the research i can to find how if this is hereditary or if there is some sort of test we could do to find out if it could be, any info is greatly appreciated, also any one with a female akita interested in breeding please contact me...thanks!

Well, I'd contact your local breed club and check for all the required health tests and certs that really should be done before breeding. Your vet should also be able to tell you. If it's epilepsy, I am pretty certain that this is a hereditary trait & the bitch should NOT be bred - she should be spayed, if that's the case, to lessen chances of mammary cancer & "accidental" pregnancy.

I have Rottweilers - don't breed - and would never consider buying a puppy from someone whio had not done pretty careful research & testing on heart, eyes, hips, elbows, temperament, etc.
