PETA employees charged with animal cruelty
Two arrested in N.C. for dumping dead dogs, cats in garbage bin

AHOSKIE, N.C. - Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been charged with animal cruelty after dumping dead dogs and cats in a shopping center garbage bin, police said.

Investigators staked out the bin after discovering that dead animals had been dumped there every Wednesday for the past four weeks, Ahoskie police said in a prepared statement Thursday.

PETA has scheduled a news conference for Friday in Norfolk, Va., where the group is based.

Police found 18 dead animals in the bin and 13 more in a van registered to PETA. The animals were from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said.

The two were picking up animals to be brought back to PETA headquarters for euthanization, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said Thursday. Neither police nor PETA offered any theory on why the animals might have been dumped.

Police charged Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, Va., each with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. They were released on bond and an initial court date was set for Friday.

Hinkle has been suspended, but Cook continues to work PETA, Newkirk said.

Newkirk said she doubted Hinkle had ever been cruel to an animal and said if the animals were placed in the bin, “We will be appalled.”

Euthanasia is a common PETA practice. Search the net you'll find worse stories involving PETA.

I only posted the article because I was appalled at how they were disposing of the animals, not that they were euthanizing (sp) them. I understand that they can only help so many animals and that unfortunately some of them must be put to sleep, but do they have to dump the bodies in a shopping center garbage bin? These poor animals had no dignity in their lives, the least that PETA can give them is some in death.

"Newkirk said ...... if the animals were placed in the bin, “We will be appalled.” "

Uh, Ingrid.. There doesn't seem to be a question as to whether or not these 18 bodies were placed in the bin... How about you start being appalled now -- or are you too busy wrapping naked supermodels in handi-wrap for your next big media event? Puh!

I HATE PETA! I used to support them, then I found out they feel all "Pit Bull" breeds should be destroyed until they are extinct... I'm mean... seriously... need I say more? It's all because Ingrid was bit on the leg by one... I was bit three times by different GSD's in my life and I would adopt one once I get a bigger house! It's not the breed... it's the idiot owners! I was so upset about my finding (which I read in the book "Dossier of a Dangerous Dog" by Vickie Hearn- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) I wrote them a letter asking if it was true and they tried sugar coating it, so I wrote back the interpretation blunty and said.. "please correct me if I'm wrong but what I get out of your response is that your organization feels and support...." just to make is short and sweet for you all. I then ended saying "Again I ask for you to let me know if I am misinterpreting your response, but if I am not I will now resign my membership and never deal with your organization in a friendly, supportive manner." Their response to me was "We are sorry you feel that way". Which was admitting that they support this... I think I'm still in shock as this only happened about two weeks ago.

When I get home from work I will start a thread with the letters and responses I have saved. Unbelievable!
