having problems

I don't know where to post this to get advice. so if this gets moved i know it's the wrong spot! sorry this is long and rambling  NOw on to the problem! As some may know that I posted a puppy up for adoption, so far we've had no luck in finding a home for her. The town I live in has a by-law of 3 dogs per household, and I have 3 not including the one that needs a home, so i have 1 extra and I wrote a letter to the township explaining the situation. I had the Town superintendent "visit" me at work telling me that I have to " get rid of the puppy" or they will take matters into their own hands! so you guys can imagine how I feel about that. I asked what my options were and he stated that (in his exact words) " put a bullet in it's head!" or take it to the reserve 35 kms from town and leave it on the side of the road! I am completly disgusted with him and pretty much told him that ( not in those exact terms I didn't want to offend anyone with my vulgar language :o ) My hubby rescued a dog on the side of the road in that reserve that turned out to be a wonderful dog. On my lunch break I went to the town office and put in a complaint. I am at a loss for what to do. I have even called the nearest shelter and they can't take any animals, they have run out of space and have no more foster homes. so my final question is...... can they actually take the puppy and shoot her? I just don't know what to do.

Hi there,
Can you tell me what kind of pup this is?

That is just wrong on so many levels!

I seriously doubt they can take her and shoot her. First of all, he told you to do it, right? He didn't threaten that he would. I think he was just being an a$$ on a power trip or something.

Call around to other all-breed rescues, explain your situation (that you're being threatened by the town), and see if any of them can take her.

Sorry I can't be of any more help. :(

Have you tried the OSPCA? They might know laws re: what your township can and cant' do and may even be able to offer you some advise what to do. Just a thought.

According to a recent thread, "Shooting Dogs and Cats in N. ON (again) ", it is common practice in some parts of northern Ontario. Disgusting practice to say the least. There are folks on this forum who have been working at getting that abolished. If you refer to the thread I mentioned, you'll see some of the outrage people feel.

Where do you live, please? Perhaps someone on this forum can assist by taking the little guy in. Do you know anyone that can foster the puppy that lives near you? Can a neighbour or friend take the pup? I'm sure someone on this site can take the dog from you and foster it and maybe find it a good permanent home.

You are an  for helping and caring for this little one. The bylaw guy is a total heartless jerk. You had best be trying to move this puppy pronto, as now they know that you have it in your care and will no doubt make more "visits".

Can anyone out there help out??

The puppy is a husky shepard cross. looks more like a shepard. I'm trying to post a picture, can't quite figure it out yet! I'd rather PM you the town that I live in. It's a tiny town in northern ontario. Ya he told us to shoot her, but he said that if she's wasn't gone soon they will have to take her and "destroy" her. that means take her to the dump and shoot her and leave her!! I want to find her a home FAR away from here! there are so many strays around here as is. I'm on the ospca site right now looking for info!

I see from your puppy adoption post that the nearest vet to you is a 5 hour drive  Is there any way you can contact the vet or some shelter/foster group in that city and see if they can help you? You did say you wanted to move her far away :o . Perhaps someone there can assist you in rehoming her.

Dog Mom, pm me if you want help getting that picture posted.

I think your best bet would be to contact all of the OSPCA offices and private rescues and plead your case. Sounds like that poor baby needs out NOW!

I was just going to offer to help post the picture as well. :D We're just so darn helpful here.

Can someone in your family licence that pup to a different address? Say you puppysit while family are at work etc....?

It's funny that you mention that because I take care of my sister's dog all the time when she is away for work and training. He said that'll have to stop too. which is crap because All the dogs are in the house when we are not home and then the only time we have them out for extended periods is when we are at home in the evenings and one of us is out there with them. they are also inside from 10pm till 6 am it's not like they are outside all the time barking or making noise. Grrrrrrrrrrrr it's not right when there are tons of dogs running loose and my dogs are in the fenced yard or the house, and we are the one getting in trouble..............sorry for the rant

I would just concentrate on getting the dog a new home and do your best with the city council *******. If Canada is anything like the US, it takes weeks upon weeks for anything to actually be done about someone breaking a city code. At the very least, you should have enough time to adopt the dog out or give it to an animal rescue.

Oh I don't agree with the doggy daycare having to be stopped. That's just ridiculous. Are you sure someone isn't trying to push his authority around. I think you need to maybe consult with your counsellor (member of parliaments office)

Unfortunately there are by-laws on how many dogs you can have.. ..We also have it here in Hamilton. You are allowed 3 large dogs and 4 small dogs.

And no they can NOT take her and shoot her.

I would definately get in touch with the OSPCA and tell them what you have been told.I would definately put in a complaint about this A$$

Why, oh why did you have to post that picture!!! She is most stunning and now I want her!! But I have 3 dogs already plus take care of most of the others on my street! She is gorgeous and you will have no problem finding a home now, for this beauty! Oh crap.....I LOVE HER ALREADY!! Why are the bylaws so strict for everyone? There are some households that are most capable of taking care of more than 3 dogs. I would take her in a heartbeat, except for the laws in London. What a sweet girl she is!

What a beautiful little pup
I realize as horrible as it sounds, shooting dogs in very rural areas is common practise and so far the OSPCA has not reacted,so I doubt they would be able to do something about this one little puppy, but it's worth a try, maybe they can make an example of this one little life..
With all the dogs running loose, why pick on you,who really care for your animals, that's one thing I don't understand,by-law or not...
I hope you and the little pup will find a solution,I don't know what I would do,would someone suggest I shoot one of my animals...but I guess sanity has to prevail if you want a happy ending for the little girl
Please keep us posted!

Just an idea, but could you contact one of the papers either in your area and or a national newspaper. A great human interest story. Not only to get greater coverage, but also to hilight what this guy said - create a public stink over the cruelty of this guy as well as maybe someone somewhere will be able to adopt your dog. Can you see the headlines, 'public official to shoot dog' - who wouldn't want to read that story!

This is why I love this site.........you guys are brilliant!!! I found out that there was a town council meeting last night. so i went  muhahaa I put in a formal complaint with the council about the A$$. I also found out that if I need to I can apply for a kennel licence and have up to a certain number of dogs in my care at any given time. I'm thinking about doing that so I can still do "day care" for my sisters dog! and not worry about someone taking princess away!! And Legally they can't consider her a Dog until she is 6 months when she needs to licenced!! so that means they can't do anything for a couple of more weeks (she turns 6mths on the 30th) :D Daizy that's a great idea. we have no newspaper around here but I'll send it to the surrounding cities!! thanks again Writing4fun you are an

It is nice to see people pulling together and using their collective smarts to help out. Seems like things are turning out in a positive way! Attending a council meeting: WELL DONE! :thumbs up Keep it up people!!

Argh! I love this site but every now and then I have one of those moments when I really really wish you guys weren't in Canada. This is DEFINITELY one of those moments!!! What a gorgeous puppy. I'm a huge softie as it is but I have an even bigger soft-spot for shepherds and this girl just breaks my heart.

I realize we need a bit more legislation regarding dog-ownership down here -- but things like this also make me realize how very fortunate we are. If you happen to be travelling through the US Gulf Coast with puppy-in-tow... uh just drop her off for me. :) Good luck to you and big hugs for taking her in!!! :grouphug:

Gorgeous pup and best of luck I hope it all turns out WONDERFUL :D

I'm glad there are restrictions on dog ownership, as there are unscrupulous individuals and 'weirdo's that would run amuck with owning dozens of dogs. Not able to care for them, then get them seized sick or dead...so we have to keep an open mind on that front!

Three does sound like a good number, one more wouldn't hurt though ;) LOL

We have potential "parents" for princess, someone called today and wanted to come and meet her. YAY  she seemed really nice on the phone, we talked about an adoption contract. She has 1 other dog a 2 year old male purebred german shepard that is neutered. She is bringing the other dog with her. I am so excited I hope this all works out for the best! btw princess will be spayed on friday. it will cost $173.34. what should I charge for an adoption fee? I was thinking just the spaying amount. if anyone has any "adoption" related questions that i should ask. Please tell me. it would be greatly appreacated(sp)

You have to do a home visit at their house and check out their vet as a reference too.

Dog Mom
July 22nd, 2005, 08:14 AM
well I met with the potential parent, and her dog. Well she's not getting princess, her male is not neutered as she stated!! and she has no intention of getting him done. I called the vet that she gave as a reference and they didn't have any record of her or her dog. we are just about to leave for the vets office 5 hr drive, to get princess spayed. So for anyone who's looking for a puppy or knows of anyone who is looking for a puppy. Princess is still needing a home.

OMG, she is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I wish sooooo much I could take her. I agree with contacting the papers with that idiots comments. I know in our area, the previous contracted By Law Enforcement Officer was fired due to too many complaints.

This may be a long shot, would your vet be willing to contact other GSD owners who have lost their beloved GSD's and asked them if they were ready to adopt/own another? Or does the closest vet, (I read they were far away) be willing to put up an adoption flyer in his waiting room? Our vet has such a bullitin board. They don't allow anyone to post For Sale without good reason such as yours, but in some cases they will put up a pic of a pup that needs a good home. They're also aware of circumstances regarding potential owners eg if they'd be responsible. Regarding the price, you should certainly get the spay costs back, IMHO, but of course it's more important that beautiful girl go to a good home. Crossing my fingers the vet knows some GSD lovers who are ready to take on the responsibility of a new bundle of joy waiting to be loved.

Please keep us updated. Good luck with the kennel licence if the above is not an option :grouphug:
