Goobery Eyes

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks that Spencer wakes up in the morning with a lot of sleep in the corner of his eyes. I have to get a kleenex and wipe them every morning. It is usually yellow, green, or brown. Is this normal for beagles? I had a lab before and she was never like this. Could it be a sign of allergies?

A visit to the vet of course would rule out any infections, especially if this is not normal for your dog. Our newf gets "eye boogers" all the time. From my own experience, I've seen it more in dogs that have the droopy bottom eyelids.

I noted in one of the other threads that two of my three (all terriers / terrier mixes) have been getting some serious eye goop (generally ranging from yellow to green) throughout the day. Both have been attributed to the grass / pollen as they were fine all winter and part of the spring. It wasn't until the grass started greening up and the flowers perking up that they increased eye goop production. When I had them in for their annual checks a few weeks back, my vet said that it was due to seasonal conditions for them and that neither have well draining tear ducts. My third gets a minor amount, which accumulates as tear stains, but nothing close to what the other two get.

My beagle gets them most mornings. We just wipe them off and that's it. People get them after sleeping too. I would worry if it were excessive. If you notice that something is obviously bothering the eye then a trip to the vet may be necessary.

Infections can also cause greeny eye goobs... I'd ask the vet to be sure.

I think that it might have something to do with the grass because it only started about a month ago, he was fine all winter. He only gets it in the morning or after a nap. I was just surprised at how much he gets, like one big blob. More than I have ever seen humans get. I will keep an eye on it and see if it gets any better. I know that grass bothers me as well but I can take medication for that, he can't.
