Very Embarrasing Question ???

I hope someone out there has experienced this issue (not likely very many, though) and can help, its really embarrasing! I have a 3 year old male mutt and a 3 month (?) old kitten (not exactly sure on her age as a neighbor gave her to me). I think the kitten may have been removed from its mother to early as she sucks on my dog - lately, she has had a habit of sucking his (ahem!) and he's loving it and giving up his juice to her. How can I stop this disgusting habit??? He has been fixed and I think its time to have her fixed, will this stop this action? Each time I catch them, I seperate them and put them up in their rooms (dog stays outside during the day but I've spoiled him and let him inside when I'm home). The two of them get along purfectly, its quite amazing watching them. I just would like to put an end to this awful habit.
Thanks!

I have had a request to close this thread because it is felt that this is a joke.

Do others feel this is a joke?....before I close the thread at the end of the day...JUST in case.

I think the OP should respond within the next hour to let us know if this is a joke or not. (considering this was their first post - I'm tempted to agree that it is a joke!)

This could very well be true. Puppies and kittens who lose a mom at a early age often nurse on each other - any part they can - and can cause serious damage to tails, ears or reproductive organs doing this.

Orphan litters often have to be separated from each other for this very reason.

I understand that, my cat nurses on her own foot, but can a neutered male dog ejaculate?

i was under the impression they couldnt

They shouldn't be able to, they don't have the juice maker. That's what makes me think it is a joke too. I would understand if it was a 3 week old kitten but 3 months?

my cat still nurses her foot at 4 yrs old,

but it was the neutered dog bit that sets off the flag for me

Actually, the prostate gland produces the fluid, so ejaculation is possible even in neutered dogs.

Neutered dogs can, and do, tie and mate with bitches. They are just firing "blanks."

As for 3 month old kittens nursing. I have seen adult kittens still nursing if the mother will allow it.

Sound like a joke to me

Minnow used to try and nurse on my dog's belly fur until she was 5 months old. So it's entirely possible, I'm just not sure if I believe it. But I suppose anything can happen.

Spray some Bitter Apple spray on his ahem. What kind of dog that a kitten this age can actually accomplish this? Small dog I assume? Very very small dog?

That may burn  I would consult a vet, before you spray anything on his "ahem".

If this isn't a joke - I would use a squirt bottle on the kitty every time he tried it. I am also thinking that it would have to be a very small dog for a cat to be able to do this to him.

my pup was interested in my moms dogs at a young age, we just kept pushing him away, with a cat can't you teach them not to do just about anything by spraying them with water

Seeing as this SEEMS like it is not a joke, this thread will stay open until the mods or I decide it is time to close it.

Good point, that's what I thought to but apparently was wrong. My parents had my dog fixed when I first got it. Confused now!

Where would I find bitter apple spray? Would they have something like that at Walmart or a local Co-Op? My dog is not large but not overly small, he's just extremely docile and so not agggressive at all. Thanks for the info!

I've done the water thing each time I catch them, just goes right back at it in a few minutes. I'm really tired of this behavior and would like to see it stopped. Thanks for any info ya'll have give so far!

You can find bitter apple spray or something similar at any pet store.

That's part of my problem, we don't have a pet store where I live. The closest thing is a bird shop. Would a vet be likely to have this?

They'd probably have it at walmart...if not, Call your vet to ask if he/she has it or where u can get it.

I would spray the cat with a water bottle before. Bitter apple might deter the dog from cleaning himself too, on top of maybe burning his parts...

good point about the burning - i'm sorta embarrased to go to my vet as he goes to my church and all. thought i might have an easier time online - thanks all!

Yes it might, if you pulled back the sheath and sprayed it along the sheath of his penis. Hopefully the OP isn't dumb enough to do this.

You can spray around a sensitive area by holding something in front of it before spraying, or spraying a cloth and wiping the spray onto the area. Or use melaleuca or tea tree oil.

Waterguns sometimes work but most people make the mistake of threatening the animal with a spray. You don't want them to know where the spray came from, or they just learn not to do it in front of you - if they think it's divine intervention, they learn not to do it ever.

Ok, finally asked a vet today (a co-worker's mother is a vet so I asked her). Like most of you, she said to squirt it with water. She also said since this doesn't seem to work very well, for me to seperate the 2 of them for a couple of weeks to break the cycle. Otherwise, they may do this for years. She said she has heard of this occuring but that it usually only occurs when a cat has been removed from its mother to soon. Thanks for all your suggestions!

You can try that, or least keep them apart when you can't watch them. Cats are junkies, and get hooked on things quickly. Prevention is always easier when it comes to cats, but you can break the habit.

This is not necessarily caused by a kitten being taken from mom too soon. I've seen a 7 year old cat still nursing on her indulgent mother (my own mother's cats!)

I'm not shure how this works but here goes....I have 10 orphan puppies, who regularly "nurse" their siblings much to my dismay. However, I need to have advice on proper mommy ediquet. These are Pit bull pups that were to be drowned due to bylaw changes in our area; and without proper dominant/submissive teaching they may not develope mentaly healthy. Does any one have this kind of dog behavior knowlege? Pardon my spelling :)
thank you
