I had an discussion with my friend about dog weight. She said that puppy cannot overweight/over grow dam or sire. I think that puppy can become bigger than its parents if for exemple one of the parents was the smallest of the litter. Any comments?

I know it is possible for a dog to over grow its parents.
My dogs Sire is a champion, but he is on the smaller size of the allowance, stands 18 inches, when normal would be 19-20. One of his pups has turned out to be 19 inches, and championed as well (ya) So yes, it is possible.
MY dog, is smaller than both her parents(16 inches), but she was the runt. If we had breed her, her pups woulda been taller than her!

it's all genetic. Just like humans, it's the combo of genes that determine height. My mom is 5 ft and my dad 5'3" and I am 5'8"....
If either of the parents have tall genes in their genetic makeup, they could be recessive or dormant, and only come out if bred with another dog with tall recessive genes...and even if both parents are short, they can be tall, as well as a short dog coming from two tall parents.

It's partly genetics but also partly diet and health too. If you get what is supposed to end up a huge doggy and feed him garbage food, chances are he won't make it to his full weight according to his genes. On the other hand, if he has access to better food than his parents and a healthier lifestyle, chances are he will be bigger. It is the same in humans-- the progression to super tall people over time. My aunt's kids are all a foot taller than her or her hubby...

I really agree with Prin (although I'm sure genetics are a factor too - just probably not as much as their environment) The reason is say this is because of Dodger:
At 6 months old, he was nowhere near 2/3 the size of his adultweight, which is the estimate of how large a pup should be at the time. I think because he was abandoned a 6 weeks of age, he was stunted - and because he was such a unexpected find, I admit he did eat Pedigree for the first couple of weeks. He's actually grown taller at a faster rate, from now then he did when he was younger. Since 9 months old he has grown almost 6 inches which puts him up at th 26 inch mark - which also makes him taller then the standard for and American Foxhound :p !!!
Anyway, that's what I'm basing my opinion on but it could just be a fluke!

My toy poodle and her litter mate brother are double the size of their mother. The father was a little larger toy poodle, so they have inheritated his stature.
