I use http://www.skype.com for all my calls to family and friends (who are scattered between the west coast and easy coasts of Canada). You can speak computer-to-computer, if the person you are calling has a computer with microphone and speakers, or you can call phone lines directly. My calls from the UK to Canada are under a penny...
I had posted this on my frugal forum.. thought a few might be able to use it here..

I have used VoiceOver IP too - being a gadget girl and all - but I have an excellent LD plan that offers unlimited LD to Canada and the US (a pkg deal that includes high speed internet, cell phone - 220 mins/mo and LD) for $70/mo. Previously, I was paying over $100 for all the same services and often used phone cards. This is so much simpler!!
I still like to experiment with Internet phone options tho from time to time. Like the videoconferencing capability of some of the apps like MSN and CUSeeMe tho I still love my $40,000 setup at work.
