Hamster Problems

June 3rd, 2005, 10:08 AM
My brother has a female hamster, she is probably a year and a half year old.
A few weeks back when we were cleaning her out, I noticed a large *how can I describe it* bump on her rear end. My Mum said she thought this might be her sex organs, but it's way too big and it hasn't settled down. I'm being morbid and assuming it's a tumour. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, and is still eating and drinking. Can anyone shed any light?

Tumours are not uncommon in old hamsters. I assume this is a Syrian hamster, and the average life span is only about two years anyway.

There is a chance that the tumour (if that's what it is) could be removed. You would have to speak with your vet.

I agree with your Mom! But you've never noticed it before?? Does it look like a bum?

I would have said it was her sex organs too - but this is really big and quite obvious. Plus, my hamster, who is her sister, hasn't got this - her sex organs swelled but only for a short time. Yes, this is a Syrian

Have you called and talked to your vet.

Not yet, because the hamster doesn't appear to be distressed

Um...sounds like this female is actually a male possibly.. THe males have a huge bump at the base of the tail which is the testes.

Thanks Shannon :)
Raingirl I don't think this is the case, as she hasn't had this all the time. I will see how the condition develops and be sure to tell you of any changes
