Going on day four of Ciara refusing food. Today she vomited a few times so I gave her Reglan...afterwards she did manage to eat a little turkey. Two days ago she did eat some liverwurst and ice cream. I was ready to hook her up to an IV line and LRS but she started to drink on her own about 4pm.
For her to balk at food I know the time is growing near. Her gums and tongue are pale....I also can tell her pain is minor, she will still walk with ease and muster for a ride with excitement but she is starting to give me those signs that I know all too well. I log on only when she is resting...kinda gives me a little relief from crying so much.

Chico and LR, I can't Thank you two enough for your support. Any prayers and good vibes are very welcome. The next few days will really tell.
This is so tough.

Prayer's & kind words go a long way...Thank You everyone!

I came home from Dr. Stapler's hospital with Ciara and a new understanding. I have been at odds with her lately over the bills and care...but enough of that for now.

Dr. Stapler feels that she can get Ciara through this crisis for now...I made the appointment for euthanasia & cremation (ashes returned).

We agree that Ciara will not be here a year from now, most likely less. Could be even next week or month..

Ciara is still alert. She still wants to do her normal routine.

NPO for the next 24 hours...(from 6pm.) She received iv 500 ml lrs . B vitiman sq. Depo Medrol and Tagamet sq and I give the next two at 12am & 6am.

I was humbled to borrow the money from my boyfriend, he gave me more than I expected and was beside myself and very lost for words.

I pre-paid Ciara's euthanasia & cremation...when I was leaving. I am trying to accept this fact, never will...but this is the real world. When the time comes and I thought it was today, I do not want to stand at the desk.
This could still happen tomorrow, or the next day.

Thank's to everyone again...I can't say it enough!

Peggy, Anita....Special thanks, and that is not enough ever! Someday somehow I will find a way to thank you .

I'm am on eggshells but with my super uber goober. If she walked on hot burning embers, I would join her too.

Nothing is helping her now except maybe giving her fluids at home. Dr. Stapler set me up this morning with all I need to treat at home...she is not responding .

I need the strength for the next step...

When I had to put my dog Travis to sleep last year we had a week to say goodbye to him. I spoilt him rotten even bought him T-bone steak the last night he was with us. I'm glad we had that time with him, I took pictures of him some with my kids, so we could remember his last days. It is hard saying goodbye but it is harder watching them suffer. You will know when the time is right, enjoy your last few days togeather. My thoughts are with you both.

In your heart you'll know when it's time. Give Ciara a big smootch for me.
And if I could reach through your monitor I would give you a big hug. My thoughts are with you and Ciara. (I like the T-bone idea)

Oh Karin you are such a WONDERFUL mom! I am so very sorry you are going through this. Hang in there. You have been in my thoughts and prayers all day!

May 25th, 2005, 07:50 PM
Ciara is still hanging in there. Gave her fluids throughout the night. This morning she acted hungry, took two small bites of canned i/d and spit the rest out. I needed another liter of fluids so while at the hospital I had a good chat with the doc. She said to try hamburger, drained well and rinsed of any fat and rice. The rice did not go over to well but the hamburger did. She has eaten about 3/4 cup so far. I give her a spoonful at a time, no need to tax her already screwed up system. Also gave her another B vitamin injection. I also started her on Nutri-Cal today, should have done this from the start but I have not been thinking straight, I can't even keep track of what day this is.
Her gums & tongue are so very pale, almost white. Pain is setting in due to withholding her pain meds so I am starting them again gradually. They need to be given with food after all. We do still suspect cancer and it is just a matter of time, putting her through more diagnostics will only stress her and my wallet with the outcome the same. She has become very, very weak...but I saw a little spurt of energy today with the combination of fluids, vitamins, Nutri-Cal and constant pestering by me. No vomiting for 24 hours now so I have stopped the nausea drugs. Btw, she is running a sub temp of 98.8 degrees last time I checked.

Have I said lately how great all of you are? If I haven't, please forgive me.

Thanks for taking the time to update us, Karin, I know you don't have time right now for much else. Hopefully what time you are not spending caring for Ciara (yeah, right, we know you) you will not forget yourself. Take the time just to make yourself a proper meal even though you probably don't feel like eating. Spoil yourself a little, everyday if you can. I just have this feeling that you are neglecting yourself......PLEASE don't!!! :grouphug:

Hugs and prayers for you and Ciara

May 26th, 2005, 06:01 AM
Karin, if sheer determination and love can help Ciara with a little more time, then I know it will happen. Thinking about the both of you daily and praying for just a little more time for the both of you.

May 26th, 2005, 06:22 AM
:sorry: I am so sorry that you have to go through this. Having had to make that decision in October I can say I know how difficult it is.

May 26th, 2005, 09:48 AM
Karin we are all her for you and praying for you! I prayed for you this morning when I got up! You will be in my thoughts through out the day! It is awful what you are going through. Ciara is sure lucky to have you on her side! You are a wonderful mom! :D

May 26th, 2005, 11:13 AM
Oh Karin Im so sorry!
I wish we could all take some inch of pain your feeling. Unfortunantly all of us know to well how this feels. Its aweful. Take comfort in knowing we are here for you and waiting patiently to comfort you.
I can't even thinnk of losing my dog but I know reality is reality.

Remember when it is her time it is her time.... if that makes sense.
It will be time she join her friends on rainbow bridge..... you will feel pain and hurt but think about where she would be without you? She could have been another shelter dog... but you gave her a long and happy life and she knows that.
She knows you don't have to be there comforting her but you are.
When she is gone remember her pain is too.
In time it will heal and you should be proud of the effort you are giving this little girl for a safe departure from this world.
My thoughts r with u and Ciara and I hope you find the will to cope...

AND PLEASE take care of yourself also. What is happening to her is life and not taking care of yourself won't make her feel better.....
Were with you on this one!
