Puppy rubs on new stuff

May 19th, 2005, 09:57 AM
This might be a silly question, but I've never seen this before. My husband bought new shoes yesterday and Davy sniffs them and checks them out of course because they are new. After he sniffs them, he starts rubbing his head all over them like when he does his nose dives in my dirty clothes piles! I just thought that was strange. He did it a few times over and over. Is he marking his scent on the shoes or something?
He's a basenji, and from what I've read, they don't lift their leg. So I was wondering if maybe this was just another way to go about doing it.
Kinda like a cat!

Nothing strange about that, the smell of new leather would attract most dogs.

My puppy LOVES daddy's stinky shoes. :yuck: :D

that is such a cute pic! My Belle rolls and rubs on everything! I gave her some soft food the other night and I caught her rolling in that too!! What a mess!

Just to warn you the best time to roll in the grossest smellyest stuff is right after a bath!!!!!

Yes, beware of the leather-licking!!! If your hubby doesn't want to wear wet shoes... ;)

Odin does that. when ever I bring something like a clean blanket out or something new (I just got a workout mat) he rolls around and rubs himself all over it, and then refuses to get off.

Capone is the same way... Clean clothes I can't leave on the floor in the basket or else he will be in the basket and half the clothes out....

We sometimes throw still wet clothes over the back of the couch and he pulls them down and lays on them....

When I sit at the end of the bed and put perfume on he instantly tries to rub up on me and dive into my lap.... doesnt work well with a 55 lb. pit.
That is why I think it has more to do with the smell then anything else...

Haha great picture! Ok, just making sure my Davy is close to!

One other thing I don't understand is why he poops and walks at the same time. Guess I won't ever figure that one out!!

Hazel also sleeps on top of my husband's shoes - she doesn't even pay any attention to mine, just his. I agree that he probably likes the smell of them.

On the walking and pooping thing - is Davey a long haired dog? Although I've heard of basenji's, I don't recall what they look like. I know that both of my female newfs do the same thing - and I always thought it was their way of trying to keep any of the poop from sticking to the fur - or maybe they think that they'll end up stepping in it or something? :D

I bet Hazel like your husbands better because they stink a lot more than yours (not that yours stink, you know what I mean!) :p

No, he has very short hair. I think he thinks he's too busy for it. He is a scent/sight hound so he is ALWAYS sniffing around. Even pooping doesn't stop him.

WOW! Look at those ears!! He is a cute little guy! Is he full grown?

You could be right that he just doesn't want to take the time to actually stand still and poop. I think I've discussed dog poop more since I joined this site than I have in my entire life! :D

Yes, he has big ears!! He is about 4.5-5 months in that picture. He will get up to about 25lbs. I wanted to put a different picture of him on here. I'm having a hard time trying to resize my pics w/irfanview. I downloaded it yesterday, but still haven't really figured it out.
