Clayton Park mutts could be running footloose in the city’s first dedicated dog park as early as next year.

Chebucto community council is recommending the city look at establishing a $49,000 dog park in Glenbourne Park during next year’s budget deliberations.

“That’s fantastic; I’m eccstatic,” said Clayton Park resident Kathi Vinson, who, along with other neighbourhood residents, has been illegally using a city ballfield to exercise their canine companions.

If approved next spring, the dog park would be constructed on an unfinished tennis court in Glenbourne Park. The area measures 82 metres by 25 metres.

While the site is smaller than dog parks established elsewhere in Canada, it will serve the purpose.

“Overall, despite the slightly smaller size, the site’s long and narrow configuration would allow for ball throwing, provides an adequate area for dogs to socialize and sprint and areas for dogs and handlers to be separate from other if desired,” city staff say.

Of the $49,000 needed, $14,000 would be spent on fencing, $20,000 to resurface the old tennis court pad, $5,000 for lighting and $7,000 for an access path and grading.
