Does she still have it? -------------------------------------- I just took this one of Marty, sitting on a pile of my fresh washed blankets (go figure!!), sitting in a pool of sun streaming in. . . .Here he is cuddling up with his cat-nip bunny. . . . badger May 17th, 2005, 11:42 AM Why do folks from the UK call their cats "moggies"? Well, first of all, they're Brits. If they didn't do weird things like calling their cats moggies they wouldn't be able to come here and take over all of our magazines without people getting upset. Aside from that, it's hard to be too sure. The word moggy (or moggie) is first recorded in the sense 'a cat' in 1911. In that example it is said to be Cockney slang. (The word does not come from rhyming slang.) The usual explanation is that it is derived from Moggy, from Mog, a hypocoristic form of Margaret (compare the more common Maggie). The most likely link is to an earlier sense of moggy, 'a promiscuous woman; prostitute'. Words for felines are often applied to women or their sexual organs (cat itself and pussy being prime examples); and as for the 'prostitute' sense, we have moll as another example of a comon hypocoristic name in M- that developed the sense 'prostitute'. The problems here are that moggy 'a prostitute', which dates from the late seventeenth century, was apparently never very common, and also that it came before that 'cat' sense, so we'd either have to assume a very long use of the 'cat' sense without it being recorded, or a reverse of the usual cat-to-woman semantic pattern. Moggy was also used in the early nineteenth century in British dialects as a pet name for a cow or calf. It is unclear whether, or how, this is related. Moggy 'cat' could simply be a generic use of the name Moggy without reference to any of its other meanings. JDG May 17th, 2005, 11:52 AM Thanks for that history lesson Badger . . my husband and I just moved back to Canada from living in England for a couple years. . . .I think the word Moggy is really cute. . . I wanted to call our cats Minou and Moggy (two different words for 'pussy cat') I only got to name one of the (Minou) - my husband named the other after Marty McFly from Back to the Future. . . from: http://www.word-detective.com/back-g.html Dear Evan: "Moggies" -- what can you tell me about this (British English) word? An English (expatriate) friend tells me, "It's a cat - typically of poor pedigree. I have no idea of the etymology. It's been years since I heard the word." I suppose my cats are "moggies," then, but where does the word come from? Is his definition correct? Is the word still in use? -- Alison Huettner, via the Internet. "Moggies" is a new one to me as well, and I'm speaking as someone who woke up one day a few years ago to discover that he had fourteen cats living in his house. It's a long story. Fortunately, that vast lumbering herd of felines has today dwindled to just two, Ernie and Rufus. Rufus lives upstairs and Ernie downstairs, and while they both seem to sleep for a living, Ernie will occasionally rouse himself just long enough to watch nature programs on the TV if I am so kind as to turn it on for him. He is partial to bird shows. Oh well, back to work. According to Norman Schur's "British English A to Zed" (a handy volume of translations of nearly 5,000 Briticisms), a "moggy" is "a kittycat, especially one without a pedigree." Mr. Schur feels that "moggy" is merely a variant of "mongrel," but it doesn't seem to be that simple. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, "moggy" actually has three meanings. Its earliest use, dating back to the early 19th century, was as a pet name for a calf or cow. "Moggy" can also mean, as the OED puts it, "an untidily dressed woman," a usage which dates to the late 19th century. The use of "moggy" to mean "kittycat" is actually the most recent of the three meanings, dating only to around 1911. As to its origin, the OED theorizes that "moggy" may be a variant of "Maggie," which is an affectionate form of the name "Margaret." This rings true to me -- I may name my cats "Rufus" and "Ernie," but only in England would they name a cow "Margaret." Terrie May 17th, 2005, 01:14 PM OMG - Not so much a cat lover, but these pics I must admit melt my heart. They are beautiful... Keep em coming :ca: kandy May 17th, 2005, 03:53 PM Such cute kitties! All of them! chico2 May 17th, 2005, 04:06 PM Badger, who's the Tabby?he looks like my Rocky, not that that is so unusual :D badger May 17th, 2005, 08:10 PM That's my Badger, who wandered into my kitchen back in 2000, wrestled the lid off a container of catnip (no mean feat), swanned into the salon, installed himself on the couch, and never left. His tolerance of all the strays who have passed through here has been amazing, although he is not averse to the odd skirmish with the neighbourhood 'toughs' who congregate on my porch (which gets the sun early),ever hopeful of a snack, which they usually get. Secretly, he would be happy if they all went away and he had me to himself. Your Rocky has the same fat feet! iRONKNiGHT May 17th, 2005, 09:44 PM What a nice Thread.. lot's of cute pix! iRONKNiGHT May 17th, 2005, 09:48 PM Merri looks sooooo comfy!
